Just realized that my favorite piece of Windows software that I'm still using is THIRTY YEARS old this year.

Yes, I've been using Paint Shop Pro, version 4.12 since the late 90's. It is super-tiny (just a few MB --- not like modern bloatware), and I know it inside and out. Almost all of the graphics I create for websites, social media, etc, are done with this piece of software.

I did buy a newer version of PSP a few years ago (out of guilt over the long-time use of the shareware but I didn't care for the newer software (except for the layers functionality --- I wish that existed in PSP 4.12).

Anyway, if you are looking for an easy-to-use piece of graphic software, this is it.

P.S. It will run on most Linux machines too.

This has to be the longest shot ever, but:

▷ Anybody here using "Paint Shop Pro 7" (yes, that one! 🧡) under Linux via Wine?

Runs almost perfectly, but there is this bug:

▷ Right-clicking on a layer opens up two overlapping context menus, and the lower one (the one you would want) is not accessible. 😶

Any idea how to fix this? 🥺

I'd be incredibly grateful for any tips or boosts!

Just a tiny thing that is not so great: whenever I start Pain Shop Pro (either 7 or 8) via Wine, I get three additional entries in the task bar named "Preview", without a corresponding window. I can close them manually, but it is a bit annoying. 😅

Does anyone have an idea how to fix this? 👀

Wow! I did not expect that! 😮

After installing Wine under Linux Mint, I was able to simply install my beloved tools "Paint Shop Pro" 7 & 8!

Just by running their Windows installer from the mounted ISO. What the heck? 🤯

That's a very promising start! 💜

I started a little repository of scripts that help improve the user experience of this gem. 💎

Just added a script that automatically selects the "pan" tool when clicking the middle mouse button, just like in most modern tools. 🙂

By now, I found my CD-Roms of PSP8 & PSP9, and installed them. 🙂 Main difference for me: no more floating tool windows, which I like! ⭐

One small issue: copy/pasting from or to other graphics programs (e.g. Gimp, Krita) loses all transparency information. 😢

Question to you PSP experts: do you know a way to fix this? 🙂

Yesterday, I found my old CD-ROM of

🎨 Paint Shop Pro 7 🎨

("Anniversary Edition" from 2001 by Jasc Software).

Turns out: it runs flawlessly on my Windows 11 system. 😮

It is hard to overstate how much mileage I got out of this software back in the days. ✨

And it looks like I am not done! Pinned it to the taskbar, and now I am using it productively again! 💜

100 Euros well spent in 2001! 😄

And today's #photoshop #PaintShopPro look back is for 2008. It was the last year for that web competition, so the special holiday events were at an end (though I do have a few extras to come!). More pixel graphics came my way... so, the wreath & trees are cute, but the background to me makes it too busy. The pumpkin, I guess finally figured I needed some #cats in one! And the snowman, well, definitely something I had to figure out, but why not try to get a droid there - so here's #R2D2 !

Today's #photoshop and #PaintShopPro look back goes to 2007. The pumpkin - hey, if I did a #StarWars one previously, I had to include a #StarTrek one! Probably liked it then, but eh, it's a little busy to me now (and would go with either TNG or DS9 now too). As are the wreath and tree, but then I had discovered sites with #pixel art sets, so was using those now - and I still loved that red background! But still love that snowman - well, snowlady, because yep, #ILoveLucy :)

Today's visit to my #holiday #photoshop #PaintShopPro contest graphics, it's to 2006. And here, I like the matching graphics in the tree (still a bit busy though), the wreath's kind of okay, just a really busy background - but the stars of this bunch: with the snowman, I figured hey, if I had an #Ernie, I need his friend, so here's #Bert - and the pumpkin, well, I had to get #Vader in one at some point! Think I might have tried a Vader snowman, but it just didn't work at all... LOL

In today's look back at my #holiday tries at #photoshop and #PaintShopPro - we visit 2005. And let's just say because the movie was released in December of 2004, I totally discovered #Phantom of the Opera. ;) #POTO

Looking at it now, I rather like the wreath, but the tree is driving me nuts that the pixel or other graphics really don't match each other in style or colors. Oh well. LOL

Today's #photoshop and #PaintShopPro look back is from 2004. This year's pumpkin looking at it now is a little busy, but still quite spacey... and the snowman, well, did I ever mention I still love #SesameStreet and my most favorite character is #Ernie? Well, think that's obvious now. LOL Still very proud of it. And the tree's not bad, just it's driving me nuts that the top ribbon isn't matching the colors with the ones hanging down that I drew myself, but that's just me.😉

So, I had the thought to put something actually original of mine as a post here... once upon a time, when my websites were part of many web competitions, for the holidays this one had graphics contests; and me, since I was trying to learn the basics of #photoshop but most especially #PaintShopPro #PSP I tried to do them in my own way. I'll do it year by year since that's how I have them saved, starting with 2003 (alas, all I have from 2002 are the awards for them). Watch for the reply to this!

I am not a subscription pricing concept fan. In fact I try to avoid services like that. However when it comes to #art software I used #PaintShopPro in the 1990s, switched due to my studies to #photoshop ,which started with a 30€ subs./month and is now at 64€/ month and once a year canceling option. I switched in 2020 to #Clipstudiopaint (#csp) because a friend loves them. Now they announced they would favor #subscription customers instead of one time purchase #artists. 👩‍🎨 I am testing #krita rn

Followed the "80's style animation loop in Eevee" tutorial" for #Blender by #Ducky3D, and then whipped out an old copy of #Jasc #PaintShopPro 7 ¹ from 2001, to make some #80s style buttons for my #streaming about page.

While yellow-green is more my colour, I think the blue version is more appropriate...

¹ I actually have a legit copy of PSP 2020 as well, but version 7 is just so much more intuitive, perhaps because that's the version I spent the most time in. Maybe I should hunt down a boxed copy just for #nostalgia sakes...

After playing around with @krita and and exploring the various brushes I installed yesterday, I ended up with this #drawing that I'm quite satisfied with.
It's perhaps a bit more #abstract than the previous one, but it reminds me a bit of the #waxPaintings someone I followed on #GooglePlus used to make.
So far I quite like #Krita; it brings back some of the fun I used to have in high-school, playing with #PaintShopPro, perhaps mixed with some #BobRoss #JoyOfPainting.
