There are only 2 croissant / pain au chocolat places in San Francisco that my French wife doesn’t hate (Arsicault and the French Spot.. she finds the rest too ‘Americanized) but she’s also always fascinated by how large they are in the U.S. even in the French-run places.
(Pâtisserie Rotha in Albany is also excellent but we don’t often get to the east bay before 9am)
(Tartine is like 4x the size ha ans we don’t love it, but we are haters of Le Marais)
Here’s a normal sized pain au chocolat (I’ve already had a savory breakfast so now I can eat chocolate / sweets!)
Not kidding when I say they’re at least 3x larger in San Francisco. When we’ve spoken to the French bakers / owners they’re just like yea that’s what Americans expect and if we make it normal sized people will complain :)

Le terme employé pour désigner la même viennoiserie ne doit pas être clivant.
L’important est que cette viennoiserie soit bonne 😋 en évitant les produits ultra-transformés, et que chacun prenne plaisir à en acheter dans sa boulangerie pour continuer à faire vivre son commerce de proximité.

La jeune femme m'interpelle :
- Comment vous appelez ça en France ?
- Vous avez le choix entre "Pain au chocolat" et "Chocolatine"*commence à prononcer les deux noms*
- Va pour Chocolatine. Ça sonne trop mignon comme nom et c'est plus facile à retenir.
Voici donc un nouvel argument si vous voulez défendre l'appellation "Chocolatine" !

(Quand Sabine et moi nous avons déménagé à Bordeaux, dont je suis originaire, Sabine la Parisienne s’est refusée à adopter « chocolatine », c’était comme un acte de résistance, pour elle. Il y a bien sans doute quelque chose que se joue avec ce mot…)
Je me rends compte que je connaissais très mal la répartition géographique de l’emploi de chocolatine. Je croyais que ça rayonnait dans le sud-est de l’hexagone, et… pas du tout !
Un sondage en ligne, mené rigoureusement par une équipe de linguistes a permis de cartographier l’usage. Mathieu Avanzi, un linguiste spécialiste des français régionaux, a écrit en 2017 un bon article à ce sujet pour The Conversation.
