  1. Today in 2013, the Indian Mujahideen detonated bombs at the Mahābodhi Temple (Buddhism's most sacred site). They should be thankful Buddha taught pacifism (ahiṃsā).

Of course, I also condemn the 7/7/2005 Islamic terrorist attack in the UK.

  6. Arthur Boyd tapestries of Saint Francis of Assisi on display after 50 years

"Twenty enormous tapestries depicting the life of Saint Francis of Assisi, commissioned by artist Arthur Boyd, will be displayed at the National Gallery. The workshop's director, Vera Fino, said weavers worked shoulder to shoulder around the clock, adding 3 centimetres to the tapestries each day." >>
    abc.net.au/news/2026-06-19/art

    The artist and the weavers

Who wove the twenty enormous tapestries?
On the websites/ exhibition it mentions the name of a male artist

Has he done 8 million individual stitches on each of the 20 tapestries on eight-hour shifts?

    Who spun the wool?

    So many questions.
    So much to see.
    So much to ask.

  18. If the essay Pacifism and the war was really written by George Orwell during WW2, it's very strange to me that his views on pacifism is not mentioned at all in his Wikipedia article.

The reason I feel uncertain about the origin of the text is because the best source for it I can find is this Russian website, and otherwise seemingly random blogs. Which is why I went to Wikipedia for more information about it.

    That is real #pacifism.

Solving conflicts instead of abusing them. #Russia tried to hold #Transnistria hostage, deprived them of energy for example. And now the tide may turn.

Similar to Crimea, which turned from an asset to a liability, too.

    Listen to that, #Putin fanboys!

Pacifism. Pacifism is objectively pro-Fascist. This is elementary common sense. If you hamper the war effort of one side you automatically help that of the other. Nor is there any real way of remaining outside such a war as the present one. In practice, ‘he that is not with me is against me’. The idea that you can somehow remain aloof from and superior to the struggle, while living on food which British sailors have to risk their lives to bring you, is a bourgeois illusion bred of money and security.

And a strong resemblance to today’s twisted logic where #Russia is kind of morally allowed to do things that would be unimaginable elsewhere, just because “so they are”

Mr Savage remarks that ‘according to this type of reasoning, a German or Japanese pacifist would be “objectively pro-British”.’ But of course he would be! That is why pacifist activities are not permitted in those countries (in both of them the penalty is, or can be, beheading) while both the Germans and the Japanese do all they can to encourage the spread of pacifism in British and American territories.

And here’s the ancestors of our tankies - “realists”, Chomskys and Mearscheimers…

The Germans even run a spurious ‘freedom’ station which serves out pacifist propaganda indistinguishable from that of the P.P.U. They would stimulate pacifism in Russia as well if they could, but in that case they have tougher babies to deal with. In so far as it takes effect at all, pacifist propaganda can only be effective against those countries where a certain amount of freedom of speech is still permitted; in other words it is helpful to totalitarianism.

  26. "Bill Galvin has spent much of the past month answering the phone.

"It's been very, very busy," he says. Galvin is the counseling director at the Center on Conscience and War, which helps run the 24-hour GI Rights Hotline, set up to inform service members of their options for military discharge.

Most callers are asking how to apply to become a conscientious objector — a difficult, invasive and rarely used process. But they're also airing their concerns and frustrations, often anonymously, as the hotline allows them a space to do so without repercussions.

Military members are citing myriad reasons for wanting to leave, but the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran has been a powerful motivator. In March alone, Galvin's center took on more than 80 new clients — almost twice as many as it takes on in an average year. The busiest single day saw 12 new clients join, with one person saying four other members of their platoon were also interested.

Those numbers are a drop in the bucket when compared with the more than 1.3 million people enlisted. But for outside observers and former military officials, those calls and conversations are an indication of a troubling disquiet within the ranks."
