Oscar Peterson & Dizzy Gillespie, 1975 on Pablo

Pablo records, with a logo and name inspired by Picasso, was started by Norman Granz (who also produced this record) in the early seventies. There’s a ton of great Pablo jazz records—I generally pick them up whenever I see them.

Recorded in 1974 in London, this release brings together two greats but it is not a “legacy” album – their playing is still super vibrant here. (Gillespie won a Best Jazz Performance Grammy for this recording).

Milt Jackson - Ain’t But a Few of Us Left

Another Pablo gem with Jackson, Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown and Grady Tate.

I don’t know whether Brown was playing an electric bass here, but there’s certainly a lot of bass oomph on this particular recording.

Milt Jackson - At the Kosei Nenkin

1976 live album on Pablo, recorded in Japan, playing a swinging set with Ray Brown (bass), Teddy Edwards (sax), Cedar Walton (keys), and Billy Higgins (drums).

Japanese pressing retains most of the Pablo style, but without the huge Pablo Live top.

Interesting to note that Japanese gatefolds always come with the first LP in the 2nd (back) location.

1983 Pablo recording of Peterson and Jackson playing mostly standards. As expected, great playing by both, and a great listen.
