  1. 3/4 It is a system of ‘top #universities and #careers' that is nevertheless understood as being pretty much the natural state of things, requiring only a few adjustments.

If that’s the framework, then the outcome of any social mobility is predictable. As this #podcast demonstrates, the same upper- and middle-class (and, yes, affluent, #liberal London-centric) ideas and assumptions will continue to dominate. There’ll just be a few more (ideally #Oxbridge- and Russell Group-educated) working-class people from the regions involved in creating, disseminating and benefiting from them, as this podcast also demonstrates – although there’ll never be enough of them to make things anywhere near equal.

There’s also something pernicious about the claim here that changes in social mobility are not brought about because of political decisions so much as driven by #war and changes in #technology#AI being just the latest.

  11. Britain will not rejoin EU or set up customs union, Starmer’s top negotiator warns.

Translation: we're still frit of the racists and gammons.

PS: Nick Symonds-Thomas is another one of those useless #Oxbridge PPE graduates that infest the UK's body politic.

  13. Even if Trinity Hall, Cambridge backs away from this reportedly 'immoral' strategy of targeting recruitment at elite private schools such as Eton and Winchester, it still tells you a lot about what many people in these institutions really think.

Really wanted to see this show but it’s already sold out.

Still, reassuring to know there are so many people interested in culture that is thinking critically about Oxbridge privilege and how #class plays out in Britain today:

  19. A #video of my 'Liquidate AI Art' talk for the Computer Arts Society is now available:

    bcs.org/events-calendar/2025/o

‘This talk expands on my recent #book ‘Masked Media: What It Means To Be Human in the Age of Artificial Creative Intelligence’:

    openhumanitiespress.org/books/

It argues for liquidating #AI #art, not out of a dismissal of #artificialintelligence as techno-fascist, nihilist or parrot-like, but an insistence that art has always been created by assemblages of #humans and nonhumans.

The talk references Frieder Nake’s assertion that art should not be divided into commodifiable styles based on the #tools used, but should function as a radical force capable of disrupting the hierarchies of the art world.

Picking up on this challenge, ‘Liquidate AI Art’ shows how UK arts funding today overwhelmingly benefits upper- and middle-class, privately educated #Oxbridge #graduates.
What’s needed is a #redistribution of resources to support radically different artistic practices.

  20. When these people pontificate on our lives like they know better, remember it's nothing but a white people's club for the elites, not an actual place of knowledge and discovery.
They'd like us to think they have the finest minds in there but really it's just mediocre and over-confident posh people and a few genuine geniuses they have hanging around.

  23. 2/2 In a nutshell, as the literary world shrinks and becomes even more competitive, writers need to find other ways of setting themselves apart from their rivals. Attending #Oxbridge or the #IvyLeague is no longer enough - they all did that. So they have started to divide themselves up into high and middle brow by correcting references to #DonnaHaraway and the classics.

The take away? To build on a line of Joseph’s, what these reviewers are saying to the authors under review is: ‘you’re not special … but I am’.

  24. I see the #UniversityChallenge is (again) under attack for the elitism of allowing the over-representation of #Oxbridge on the show...

this is not a new criticism & the answer to this 'historical anomaly' is pretty easy & well know; limit the Universities of Oxford & Cambridge to one team each... like every other university (with the possible exception of the association of universities that make up the University of London).

Its not rocket science & resistance is (indeed) elitism!

  25. Things have taken an odd turn when someone who didn't attend either Oxford or Cambridge #Universities feels the need (in the FT today) to launch a defence of #OxBridge on the basis that we need these elite institutions to produce the 'best minds' of our generation(s).

    Their alumni already dominate the media, politics & life in general, leaving fewer opportunities for others;

we don't need to 'defend' them, they can do that for themselves, we need to break their grip on the UK's imagination!
