🦉 Did you know that the Long-eared Owl doesn’t actually have ears in those “ears”?
Those tufts are just feathers — used for camouflage and to express mood!
Its real ears are hidden on the sides of its head, perfectly adapted for pinpointing sounds in total darkness. 🌌#LongEaredOwl #OwlFacts #BirdPhotography #WildlifeMoments #NatureLovers #coolfalldayashoworfilm

Since owls have 14 neck vertebrae (compared to seven in humans), their necks are more flexible. They also have adaptations to their circulatory systems which allow them to rotate their head up 270° without cutting off blood to the brain.
Barn owls can see a mouse at 6-7 feet.

@Oaktag I feel a little bad about being charmed by barred owls as they are…an actual invasive species? (Like, the few northern spotted owls that remain have *stopped making territorial calls* so the barred owls won’t sweep in and attack them physically.) But somehow an individual owl is just an animal and a wonder to me, anyway!
(According to my reading, your California Spotted Owls are doing much better against ‘em!) #OwlFacts
