I think that I've uploaded my largest #OpenStreetMap revert in this decade: ~ 60k objects, 50 users, ~2k changesets and 6 hours wasted. Meta tried to do some footway mapping in Hamburg but in poor quality. Although the edits were less than a week old, I had to wade through > 300 conflicts and decided to revert many good volunteer edits in order to get the revert done.
Go away, #Meta, and don't ever touch our map here again! Stay on your #Overture playground! 🤬

Jesse Orrall z CNET donosi o zaskakującym zwrocie akcji w strategii firmy Boom Supersonic. Znana z prac nad samolotem pasażerskim Overture (który ma latać z prędkością naddźwiękową), firma ogłosiła projekt „Superpower”.

Pomysł jest genialny w swojej prostocie. Boom wziął swój autorski silnik lotniczy „Symphony”, zmodyfikował go i postawił na ziemi jako generator prądu dla centrów danych AI. Dlaczego to ma sens?
Moc: centra danych potrzebują gigantycznych, stabilnych źródeł zasilania, niezależnych od kapryśnej sieci miejskiej. Turbiny gazowe/odrzutowe świetnie się do tego nadają (są kompaktowe i potężne).
Testy: zanim wsadzisz silnik do samolotu z pasażerami, musisz go przetestować przez tysiące godzin. Używając go w serwerowniach, Boom „dociera” technologię w bezpiecznych warunkach, zarabiając na tym pieniądze.
Paliwo dla Overture
CEO firmy, Blake Scholl, nie ukrywa, że to sposób na sfinansowanie marzeń o lataniu. Budowa naddźwiękowego liniowca to kosztowna zabawa. Sprzedaż turbin dla pęczniejącego rynku AI (który płaci każdą cenę za dostępność mocy) zapewni strumień gotówki potrzebny do dokończenia prac nad samolotem Overture. Na loty pasażerskie poczekamy jeszcze około 5 lat. Ale Twoje zapytanie do ChatGPT być może już wkrótce zostanie przetworzone dzięki energii z naddźwiękowej turbiny.

While there are certainly some uses (e.g. low-quality backup where more precise data is simply not available yet for e.g. #HOT humanitarian efforts in case of earthquakes etc), note that especially adding #Overture building data to #OpenStreetMap (e.g. #RapID) is very often frowned upon, due to its low accuracy and broken geometries)

TIL that #Mapycom is more than just a renderer on top of #OpenStreetMap. They actually import buildings from #Overture, which #OSM doesn't consider reliable enough for automatic imports.
From what I've seen, the results are mixed in Greece, with many buildings that don't exist in reality.

More than a month after my detour to California’s high desert to check out Boom Supersonic’s operation there–followed by my needing time to quiz a couple of aviation experts about the company’s ambitions–this piece finally made its way to Fast Co.’s site. Joining this podcast via Zoom instead of in studio reminded me of one unsolved issue with my home office’s lighting. From 6 p.m. onwards, there wasn’t enough light streaming through the windows to illuminate my workplace adequately, then I took too long to take advantage of a sponsor break to reach for a light switch as the podcast continued for another hour and change. I can, however, take credit for helping to give this episode a title–“artisanal, locally-sourced dopamine” was my turn of phrase to describe how posting on Bluesky feels better than continuing to support a toxic ex-Twitter with free writing.
