I’m traveling at the moment so i often find myself pulling my laptop out on the train where internet is patchy.
So I’ve found myself setting up more stuff to work locally.
Thats how I found myself trying to compile and run a local copy of the Overpass API for querying open street map data… on a Mac. A solid 24-hour sprint later -- I had to wrangle data from tables in PDFs to get a solid baseline to work with (#csv here: https://pastebin.com/JGLxQMbT) -- and I've got all of the polling stations for tomorrow's #election in Tarrant county mapped out in #osm #OpenStreetMap :D

I experimented a bit within the polling_station:* namespace. Thinking I might be settling into a pattern, at least for #Texas. I dunno if I want to build up explicit relations between polling places and their (typical) associated buildings/areas or not. So for now, I chucked the relation data in a tag instead.

Ideally, future elections won't be such a pain to get bootstrapped; most polling stations tend to stay the same across elections.

Ich bin gerade in #BadHersfeld und ich glaube, ich habe noch nie eine Stadt mit so vielen Optikern gesehen. Die gibt es hier wirklich an jeder Ecke!

Kurz mal in #overpassturbo nachgesehen, wie schlimn die Plage ist, und siehe da: der findet nur sieben. Das hätte ich anders erwartet. Ich schätze, da fehlen einfach einige in #Openstreetmap oder sind irgendwie anders eingetragen. Da werde ich beim nächsten Spaziergang mal drauf achten (und mitzählen!).

So far, I only have locations that serve (at least) as early voting centers. There are several more pages of day-of voting centers that I could conceivably add. I'm debating building a small, static, mobile website with #Leaflet to perhaps make a "show me my closest voting station" feature, and maybe a "schedule my voting time" feature that spits out an ical file or something. The opening hours are all there in the OSM data.

(Annoying sidenote: most college/university locations are either early vote only, election day only, or not open at all :()

Eine Kombination aus beidem wäre m.E. optimal: die PingPongMap, die auch zu den Orten Bilder und “Bewertungen” der Platten enthält, und die OSM-Daten, die für die meisten Regionen ziemlich vollständig sein sollten. Exemplarisch für #Wuppertal ist auch zu sehen, dass in OSM einige TT-Orte dabei sind, die in der PingPongMap aber fehlen.

Just solved a fascinating #OSINT challenge using Overpass Turbo for geolocation and Suncalc for chronolocation. It's amazing how combining these tools can pinpoint a location and time from a short video!

Is it cheating if I had already planned in my head exactly what I would do to create a map in 5 minutes and also had a practice run? 😜

Anyway, here’s a map of the 201 barangays, grouped into 20 zones then 2 districts, of the city of #Pasay, in #MetroManila, #Philippines 🇵🇭 as mapped in #OpenStreetMap. I got the data from #OverpassTurbo, used text editing to add some styling, then into geojson.io from where I took a screenshot.

- Streets now are categorised as safe, less safe and dangerous (green/orange/red) when too zoomed out too see the individual lanes
- Added a map key explaining how these ratings are assigned (separated infra? speed limit <30kph? living street?)
- Added a safety disclaimer
- Removed Mapbox directions as they could be improved for cycling

Auch so, ja, ich bin am PC, hätte ich dazusagen sollen (aber du hast es wohl auch so erkannt).

(Ich mache wenig am Handy, vielleicht kann ich mir #OSMand später mal anschauen. Bekomme ich denn damit die Karte als PDF erstellt, oder als teilbaren Link? Dann könnte auch das schon eine Lösung sein! )
