STOPPED BEING HOME 💎One of the best uses I have found for AI is avoiding fifteen-minute YouTube videos containing ninety seconds of useful information and thirteen minutes of a man clearing his throat in public.
I give AI the video transcript.
It gives me the important points.
No dramatic build-up.
No repeated warnings.
No “please smash the subscribe button.”
No creator taking one perfectly decent idea and stretching it until it needs medical attention.
This suits me because I saw the problem with online performance and time-wasting a long time ago.
For me, it began with Facebook.
In the beginning, Facebook felt like a place where people simply turned up and spoke to one another.
It was great.
Real groups formed, people found one another, and there was no constant feeling that a machine was standing behind everyone controlling the conversation.
Then the algorithms turned up.
Some things were buried.
Other things were pushed into your face while wearing a fluorescent hat.
People began adjusting themselves for reach, often unconsciously.
More outrage.
More exposure.
More certainty.
More performance.
The conversation was no longer simply between friends.
There was always a machine in the room deciding who would be seen, who would vanish, and which emotional breakdown had the best engagement potential.
That was when Facebook stopped feeling like a home to me.
YouTube quickly went the same way.
A person may begin with something real to say, genuine talent, knowledge or curiosity.
Then the platform teaches them to stretch, tease, repeat, brand and perform.
Eventually, the pay-me persona slips in and takes over.
The talent may still be there.
But now you have to tunnel through the sponsorship, the thumbnail face, the fake urgency and the sacred algorithm before you reach it.
I would rather hear the truth in two minutes than watch someone marinate in the stretched-out version for twenty.
So now I outsource the slop.
I keep the useful bits.
And I keep my morning.

I got an email from Ana Gonzalez, of #Texas #aflcio about the ongoing #strike of 70 #skilled #workers represented by the Texas City Metal Trades Council at Ashland Specialty Chemicals in Texas City, #TX.
Workers are asking for our help to send messages to Ashland Plant Manager Darren Becker, urging him to come back to the table in good faith.
In negotiations, Ashland management sought to:
- Force employees to perform work outside their craft, creating serious #safety risks for members and the surrounding #community,
- Slash the paid sick time members earned over decades of bargaining, and
- #Outsource the storeroom to eliminate #union #jobs.
These workers only want to keep Ashland safe and are fighting to keep the #benefits they’ve earned.

I remember a time when one could outsource work to India, people were willing to learn and with the appropriate management skills one could have an effective team.
It is much harder now. Besides salaries having increased, I struggle to find good skills and work ethic. What seems to have increased is arrogance, entitlement and yes, Dunning Kruger.
We are now better off finding good skills elsewhere.

Not only that, but a lot of the existing ecosystems rest on the shoulders of network effects.
Once everyone you care about is on #Reddit, are you really going to be the only one not on Reddit and try to #bootstrap your own little corner for a specific community? Probably not, and attracting people there would be much harder. Reddit is the one-stop-shop - I can go there for woodworking advice, but I can also chat in #local communities, or communities around collecting #stamps, with the same account and within the same interface. Are you really going to post #photos of your fridge that you want to #sell on your blog and hope that in a year someone discovers it through a Google search? Of course not - you will go to #Facebook #Marketplace or #Craigslist and get it sold within a few days.
You, the #user, are going to go where most people are, because you’re optimizing for #solving your #problems, such as finding like-minded individuals or #selling the fridge quickly and getting it out of your garage to make room for a table saw.
Most people are this way - they don’t care who or how maintains or runs a community or network as long as that place solves the problems they set out to solve. When that #goal overlaps with the company’s desire to make money, you end up in somewhat of a goldilocks zone, but that’s typically a short-lived experience with #modern services. Part of the problem is Gmail's huge #influence. Like Lily Tomlin said, "We don't #care. We're the phone company, we don't have to.". So they don't give a damn if smaller domains have trouble delivering to Gmail #users. It's not like Gmail users have any way to actually inform Gmail that they're not getting their #mail.
And I'm sure it's just a #coincidence that the #problem just increases Gmail's business. People give up hosting, and #outsource their email to Gmail.

Again!?!🤦♂️Previously a month or two ago another #technews outlet suggested that this is a #wakeupcall for said #GovernmentServicesOrg's to #SetupTheirOwnInfrastructure or #outsource this to a #MSP so you #ControlYourOwnPlatform communications wise. Solutions to do this #infrastructurebuyback for controlling your own company's #CommsPlatforms are taking off marketing wise.
You can see the stories of what happens when a few #BadActors of private and publicly traded company platforms become unreliable to the point of endangering #PublicServicesCommunications wise for your department and company brand wise.
The funny part was the highlight of the article that said this was a less than 10% of their communications platform traffic when looked at their web site traffic where they do own vs. their bad #ToxicSocialMediaOnePointOh #web1 #web2 presence.
