We proposed three possible big light installations to our main xmas client this year; they have now been back in touch to say "yes, will take all, thanks!". So diary now looking fairly busy… 😬

Here's a few of the kites in shop windows around the local area – I've worked with the local business association to use 20 shop windows as a gallery for the young people's work
-
105 Spring-themed kite designs ready for display around the local community. Now I just need to go distribute them…
-
Just been doing kite-design workshops with two classes of 9/10 year olds locally – equal parts exhausting and brilliant, as ever. Some of the designs are incredibly sophisticated.
-
Here's the kids' work from today's illuminated mushroom-making workshop; this was a class of year 6 pupils

Oh yay! New problem to deal with: we've gone from about 500 DNS queries a day on the #OutputArts domain earlier in the year to an average of about 4000 per day over the last couple of months, and an extraordinary 24,000 queries in one day last week
Our work is absolutely not that popular, so there's some commercial-strength bullshit going on here. Imma gonna guess fucking AI web crawlers

In more serious news, today is International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and the beginning of the UN's 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence

#OutputArts recently worked with survivors to produce a booklet giving practical advice on how you can be a good friend to someone experiencing abuse. You can download a copy to read or print at our website:

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Well, the time when we put the stars back up anyway
-
The #OutputArts website consists of a few dozen pages in total. It changes only when we publish info on a new art project every few months or so. So why are the same AI crawlers hoovering up the website *multiple times per day*!
Honestly, I don't even care if you train your AI on my meanderings and I certainly can't be bothered fighting an arms race with your crawler. But, more than anything, it is the STAGGERING WASTE that irritates me.

Been installing today! New work Shatter is now in place at Dunham Massey in Altrincham ready for the Xmas light trail. You don’t get any proper pictures of it until the show opens cos of embargo!
-
Don't tell anyone I showed you this, but here's a sneaky peek at the new thing…

Experiments in bat-friendly baubles
-
Reading a conservation report on the impacts of artificial lighting on bats this morning in preparation for making a set of our baubles bat-friendly…
-
Demonstration of the careful work-in-progress management for which I am famed
-
Just realised that I never showed you the full glory of this installation. Feast your eyes on all 15 of the baubles lit at once
-
OK, I have now rendered 23 sheets of correx into 318 pieces. As predicted, the tabletop has taken a beating…
-
The cutting has begun for the next big project. This tabletop will be wrecked by the time I’m finished. Still, “eggs, omelettes” as Andy always says…
-
Did you guess what was in the pan? So, excitingly, nylon cable glands dye really well with ordinary fabric dye.
This way I get to keep a big stock of grey ones and choose later what I need for a project. Also, using dye is fun and makes you feel like you're a witch.
-
Practicing alchemy in the studio today!
-
Shit’s getting serious: I’ve had to break out the big tabletop…
-
Yes, if you guessed "giant animated xmas tree baubles", then you win a lollipop and/or a tiny rubber duck
-
Now that I'm starting to wrap the forms, the plan should hopefully be more apparent…
-
After a mass of measuring, cutting, pulling, soldering and sealing, we have 77 outdoor-rated "neon" pixel tape runs ready to be wrapped around the willow shapes
Props to Jay, who made all of the cables, came into the studio to do the pulling with me, and then soldered up all of the ends before I sealed them
-
All 15 frames are made! Can you guess what they are yet?
-
I was fully expecting shape 7, aka "the bell", to be a real problem – it has the hardest bend in it – but it has come together first go!
I may make another cup of tea to celebrate
-
Shape 6 may be my favourite – there is something so elegant about it. Not sure what to call it… a slender lemon?
-
Behold! Through an insanely long and drawn-out process – involving two kinds of willow, fabric dye and a Python script – I have succeeded in creating a ball

Self-hosting latest: I have entered the tar pit that is single-sign-on
I'm using Keycloak and it seems OK. ForgeJo and NextCloud integrate fine – although configuring this shit reminds me of the bad old days of LDAP. Ghost does not do SSO out-of-the-box, but IT HAS BEEN MADE TO. FormBricks wants an enterprise license and I can't justify that for our usage, so I will be turning my steely gaze onto its source soon…
Oh! Also, imma gonna be turning off Dropbox next week
-
I did the final DNS moves this week and switched off the old AWS instances. So this (self-hosted) Death Star is now fully operational.
I've written up a post on our new website talking about the change:
https://www.outputarts.com/news/2015-07-new-website/
It is mostly 'why', but also a bunch of technical details hidden at the bottom if you are so-inclined.
Next up is migrating a couple of hundred gig from Dropbox before our plan comes up for renewal next month.

Had a brainwave for how to do 3D labels in Flitter: draw text in a bunch of 2D canvases and then texture map them as emissive lighting onto partially transparent black cylinders

The Stokey tree is now lit! So pleased to be able to do this again this year with logistical support from Hackney Council’s streets team.
-
More stars today, as our installation Twinkle went back up outside the arts centre next to our studio for the 4th year running.
-
So today I was mostly decorating a large (growing) fir tree in Stokey for the winter celebrations, with my Output Arts hat on. The big star at the top is one of our LED stars, the rest of the decorations are a long star festoon decorated by members of the local community.

Genuinely super excited about #TheFloorIsLava which we are showing at Norwich Science Festival today and tomorrow with University of East Anglia Environmental Sciences
-
Today is going to be all about blowing up an island with a volcano!
#Volcano #TheFloorIsLava #OutputArts #LightArt -
Ok, still working out what my #fediverse posting is gonna look like, so here’s an #outputarts #workinprogressart shot of a *very* xmassy new #lightart piece
