  4. DAVID ALLAN COE, OUTLAW COUNTRY FIGURE, DIES AT 86

David Allan Coe, a famous outlaw country singer, has died at age 86. He was known for his raw lyrics and independent music style.

  5. Let us all celebrate the death of David Allen Coe. I never forgot the records he first established himself which has some of the most racist shit I've ever read the song titles to (I never felt the need to actually listen to the songs that contain hard rs if you know what I mean). I don't care that he later made anti-racist statements, there's still no excuse for that stuff.

  12. JOHNNY CASH
    Ride This Train
    #60s Canada reissue
    [Columbia “Two Eyes”, black text]

I’m starting the daunting task of going through all of my boxes in the basement; sorting them, cleaning them, and filing the really excellent stuff into my regular library.
At least half of it will be culled, but I’ll worry about that later.

This morning, I came across a box that was mostly filled with outlaw country stuff; Johnny, Waylon, some Hank, and other legends.

I love the early Johnny Cash, and this is a great one. It’s got “Slow Rider”, “Going To Memphis” and “Old Doc Brown” on it.
    Just great songs.

  18. Iron West - I Didn’t Turn This Way

I Didn’t Turn This Way is a gritty dark country groove about becoming harder after being pushed too far.
This song tells a human story of betrayal, survival, and the quiet strength that comes from learning life’s hard rules.

  25. “Uncloudy Day” from Willie Nelson’s album The Troublemaker. Recorded in 1973, it wasn’t released until 1976; Atlantic Records, with whom he’d just signed, didn’t know what to think of it or if it would sell. It did, and Willie prospered — on Columbia. #willienelson #outlawcountry

  32. Merle Haggard & Willie Nelson, Poncho & Lefty, 1983 on Epic

Another Willie Nelson duet album, this one from 1983 with fellow “outlaw” Merle Haggard with title track from Townes Van Zandt.

Great collection of songs, including Nelson’s own “Opportunity to Cry,” the title track, and the pairing of “Reasons to Quit” with “No Reason to Quit.”

My copy—via Electric Fetus in Minneapolis MN—is a Columbia Carrollton pressing with “Poncho” on the jackets and labels (as opposed to “Pancho” which later releases were updated to).

  33. The Devil Was A outlaw , Jesus was a saint

. “The Devil was an outlaw, Jesus was a saint.” A rough-cut outlaw-country anthem about choosing your road, paying your price, and walking the line between sin and salvation. Written and performed by Elvis Nash, blending grit, gospel smoke, and raw Americana storytelling.
