  3. The Our Streets crew really packed the room at the MnDOT meeting today. About a hundred people in total, with fifty arriving by bike. Bike parking overflowed, so nearby fences were commandeered for the cause. We had a brief rally outside the building before going inside.

I was one of the first people into the room. One of the MnDOT folks asked me how many people we had - their eyes bulged a bit when I said about a hundred.

MnDOT was very polite and I felt like they heard the words I was speaking, even if they didn't seem to be listening. Our ask is a simple one - don't eliminate the at-grade options for I-94 at this point in the project; advance those options to conduct a more comprehensive study.

With a hundred of us and so few of them, we really just took over the room. I spent more time chatting with other attendees about urbanism. Met a student studying urban design. Met someone else working on designing rail networks in Minnesota. Biked back to Minneapolis with a software engineer I met.

I'll end by paraphrasing one of the best lines from the rally:

People ask where the cars will go. But did MnDOT ask where people would go before it paved over their homes? No! Did MnDOT ask where kids would play? No! Did MnDOT ask where the elderly would walk without endangering their health? No!

  7. Here’s a great drone shot of Portland No Kings today. (That’s me in the very bottom/right corner.)

Portland is no NYC, SF, Chicago, etc. But we represent. About 50,000 of us marched almost 4 miles. There was love, good vibes, and friendly people. And of course, as always, it was weird.

    Whose streets? Our streets.

  9. #Minneapolis to Feds: “Get the Fuck Out”
How People in the Twin Cities Responded to a Federal Raid

    #CrimethInc, 2025-06-04

"An array of federal agencies attempted to carry out a coordinated raid in Minneapolis on the morning of Tuesday, June 3, precipitating an angry response. Locals surrounded the federal officers and police, chanting 'Get the fuck out!' and 'Whose streets? Our streets!' Word of mouth traveled quickly in the dense neighborhood, drawing a crowd and precipitating confrontations in which federal agents shoved people and attacked them with chemical weapons. Nonetheless, the federal agents ultimately retreated from the scene.

"This comes on the heels of a raid in #SanDiego in which Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers and Homeland Security Investigations agents shot #FlashBangGrenades at an angry crowd. All around the country, thanks in part to rapid response networks and community organizing, resistance to ICE is ramping up.

"We commend those who stood up to police and federal agents in Minneapolis. Here, we share some brief strategic remarks on these raids and how to resist them, followed by two firsthand accounts of the events of June 3."

Of *course* the report spends as much time on the single-digit Trumpist counter-protesters (including a lingering shot on one guy's holstered weapon under the narration 'no violence broke out') as the hundreds of pro-immigrant, pro-LGBTQIA+, pro-democracy folks.

'Til we burn the house down
So all my friends in the streets tonight
    We go singin
All my friends who're down and out
    We're gonna fight
For all our friends in the up above
With all our rage and all our love
    Addin fuel to the fire

  23. As the BIPoC residents of what PDXers know as the ¨Red House on Mississippi¨[1] face a line of weapon-wielding monsters tryin' evict them from some space, we are sharing their story to explain why we posted what we posted on the literal windows of the literal Ecostead:

    #####################
    ALL REALTORS ARE CRIMINALS.

All LANDLORDS AND RENT COLLECTORS ARE FASCISTS
    #####################

Whiny person: ¨Aww, but my <aunt, mummy, grandma> flips houses / brokers property / has renters and she not a bad person!¨

Ecosteader A: ¨She IS complicit in native genocide (that is AKA murder), racism, and class war. All modern real estate transactions are built on the colonial deed system which has been incorrect from its inception; the historical records prove it was created by foreigners to invade lands and enforce white privilege. Actions taken to perpetuate that system FOR WHATEVER REASON cannot be justified as okay, legal, or ethical in any situation, in any world or in any Universe.¨

    How to fix?

    (1) GIVE THE LAND BACK; acknowledge colonial deeds as INVALID and therefore UNENFORCEABLE from any legal standpoint.

    (2) Declare to the cartel members and its police enforces that the COLONIAL DEED SYSTEM IS WRONG, and to forefeit all interest in the system which is, at its core, an unethical, immoral, murderous system that has been ILLEGALLY destroying the health of diverse people and plants for centuries.

Actual BIPoC: ¨We don’t need another empty, high-rise, high-rent luxury condominium. The Kinneys are one of the last Black families remaining on Mississippi and their fight for their home is also a real-time fight against gentrification. In order to stand a chance against the big banks and developers who’ve systematically displaced Black families across North and Northeast Portland, we need leverage.[2]¨
