  1. The chestnuts are falling off the tree. Now, it's a race between humans and squirrels to grab the nuts from their vicious burrs. You need to wear thorn resistant shoes to walk in that mess.

    A sad anecdote in our community garden news: yesterday volunteers were going to turn over the compost. They couldn't even get a pitchfork into the frozen masses in the bins! The soil is frozen too, so turning anything over is doomed. BUT...if the compost was fermenting, should it have frozen? I know the piles haven't been turned since I started my gardens there, so that's 18 months, way too long.

  3. This is a photo of our chestnut tree this fall. It shed unknown quantities of chestnuts, of which we redeemed about 15 pounds (about 7 kg). My daughter raked up all the leaves and burs so that Monty wouldn't hurt his dainty paws.
