A sad anecdote in our community garden news: yesterday volunteers were going to turn over the compost. They couldn't even get a pitchfork into the frozen masses in the bins! The soil is frozen too, so turning anything over is doomed. BUT...if the compost was fermenting, should it have frozen? I know the piles haven't been turned since I started my gardens there, so that's 18 months, way too long. -
This is a photo of our chestnut tree this fall. It shed unknown quantities of chestnuts, of which we redeemed about 15 pounds (about 7 kg). My daughter raked up all the leaves and burs so that Monty wouldn't hurt his dainty paws.
