9/ We even have a supermassive black hole at the center of our Milky Way galaxy! It's name is Sgr A* ("Sagittarius A-star") and it's about 4 million solar masses, which makes it medium-sized in supermassive black hole terms.
The Event Horizon Telescope took a picture of it in radio light last year, and it is such a gorgeous lumpy orange donut 🤩 #OurBlackHole #blackHoles #BlackHoleFriday #astronomy #astrophysics #space

Neue Episode: EHT – Sagittarius A*
Das #EventHorizonTelescope hat am 12. Mai 2022 das erste Bild von Sagittarius A* veröffentlicht. Ich konnte nach der Pressekonferenz kurz mit einem beteiligten Wissenschaftler sprechen.

And here’s a side by side comparison of M87* the supermassive black hole at the center of the M87 galaxy, versus Sagittarius A* at the center of our galaxy. While they look similar, they couldn’t be more different!
Differences by the numbers:
Mass (in millions of suns): 6,500 vs 4
Radius (in millions of km): 10,500 vs 22
Distance (in light-years): 55 million vs 27,000If Sagittarius A* were a donut, M87* would be the size of a football field 🤯

For those who have not yet seen the news, here is the latest and greatest image of Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the center of our Milky Way galaxy.
This was the result of a 2-year long international collaboration by the teams at the Event Horizon Telescope and was just released today 🤩

RT @BlackHoleCam: This is the first image of Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the centre of our Milky Way. A new era of black hole physics begins.

We know have one more image of a black hole shadow and the snapshot of the material orbiting around the black hole. The Event Horizon Telescope now has the best image of the black hole in the heart of our Galaxy (Sgr A*) Image credit: EHT Collaboration #OurBlackHole
