  1. A very worthwhile listen for any Australian.

Richard Flanagan talks about the state of Australia - from Manus Island and the Black Summer bushfires to the erosion of #democracy - and, importantly, whether there is still reason for hope amid it all.

Thoughtful, provocative and deeply Australian. 24 minutes well spent.

Thank you bringing this to our attention 🙏🏻
    - and for referencing the piece about Segal’s hubby’s donation/s - unknown to her of course (excuse my sarcasm) - to Advance Australia, just full of nasty pasties & one of the chief funders of the nasty, lying “No” campaign in the Referendum that tried to give Australian Indigenous peoples a modest say in their own lives vs a vs govt programs etc.

“Jillian Segal, told the hearing on Thursday morning there was a “common and pervasive perception” in the Jewish community that the public broadcasters’ coverage of the war in the Middle East “lacked balance”, that there was an overemphasis on Gaza compared with other conflicts"”

Could it be that Jilly’s been hanging out with the wrong people? 🤔 Because none of the Jewish people I know & whose voices I follow would have anything to do with Jilly’s voiced & rabid opinion, which just on the face of it is utterly ludicrous. 😡

  4. Open article about Miles Davis on the Our ABC News site.

Read this opening line: “Within the pantheon of jazz, Miles Davis has assumed an almost godlike position.”

  5. One of the shittiest headlines I’ve seen.

The person who wrote this headline and thought it a good idea is a straight up turd.

  6. Quite a disturbing read on the influence and behind-the-scenes meddling of vested interest money in democracy. You won't find this in any of the #BoycottMurdoch and related media (sadly, including the sanitised #OurABC in Australia):

Whilst this is an article about US politics, the parallels to Australia are eerie. Not so much on meddling with the electoral system, as luckily, we have an electoral commission. But non-transparent bodies are buying both sides of the major parties.

  7. CW: Australian Politics, nonpartisan, upbeat

The ABC has this amazing analysis of how Australia manages to remain less messed up than the rest of the world.

We don't trust our pollies (who does?), but we do trust our elections and our institutions. They are not perfect, and we've got a bunch of glaring issues that we need to fix (especially regarding #FirstNations people), but we are significantly less broken than almost anywhere else.

Can we improve? Absolutely. And we will. But carefully and with consensus.

This photo from #ourABC's Matt Roberts captures Well Done Anus Taylor sizing up exactly where he will stick the knife into 🥔 the minute the election result becomes clear. (Assuming they both hold onto their seats, which is far from guaranteed.)

  12. I love a good #Landline story.
This is #ourABC at its best: a thoroughly-researched and well-edited piece on feral cat eradication on #KangarooIsland from Kerry Staight.

  13. Reading the coverage of #ItaButtrose in the #Lattouf #OurABC trial, getting really strong Frost / Nixon "when the president does it, it makes it legal" vibes from Buttrose's reported answers.

  14. 'Dear Aunty,

I ‘d just like to congratulate you on your new name, courtesy of Speersie on Insiders last Sunday February 2. ’Dutton says' is a great name for ‘our ABC’, perfect rebranding for the upcoming election to tell us who side you are on.

Oh! you mean, you are not on anyone's side? Of course, that other guy (you know, the PM?) doesn't have much to say at all, does he. And ‘staying in Australia makes it much easier for the prime minister to avoid providing a running commentary', (another sparkling bit of analysis from Speersie) isn't very kind to a hardworking political commentators just trying to do their job of selling one party over another, is it. No wonder you are driven, no, eagerly seeking sound bites from someone more forthcoming in all ways, like Dutts .

But seriously, had you thought of providing intelligent balance, ie. both sides of the story. After all, throwaway one-liners like "(Albo) staying in Australia makes it much easier for the prime minister to avoid providing a running commentary" isn't exactly the kind of journalism that's going to win Speerie a Gold Walkley, is it?

Just try to remember who you are supposed to be 'truly independent media organisation for all Australians' (your words, not mine).

And this from #OurABC … the last bastion of impartiality will dig its grave deeper this election round. I’m absolutely done with mainstream and corporate media, nothing good will come from their ‘reporting’. As for the journos propping up this disgusting #ThisIsNotJournalism , they all deserve to get the sack when the Fourth Estate goes belly up.

Is Leigh Sales the only churnalist in the world not calling tRump's lies, lies?

  17. Ita #Buttrose finally saying out loud what we’ve known all along, she’s a right-winger.
    Source:Independentaustralia.net
“To sum up Ita’s profound musings, everyone should just leave News Corp alone to continue on its merry way distorting the narrative within the media landscape it already dominates, so it can finish the job of destroying the public broadcaster and finally completely dismantle what’s left of our democracy.”

And ‘wet blanket’ #PetervanOnselen supports Ita’s view wholeheartedly
'There is no better evidence of the left wing bias that has taken over the ABC's political coverage than the always critical commentary about the Coalition that the political correspondent for the 7.30 television program, Laura Tingle, partakes in.’

#HandsOffOurABC for our ABC now in the hands of another right-wing leaning boss it is not going to any easier to ‘inform’ Australians and the screws will once again be tightened to ensure ABC reporting toes the centre-right to far-right plot.

I am starting to believe that a return to an ABC telling truth to power is never going to happen again. Best forget #ourABC and latch on to #IndependentNewsOutlets while ensuring we understand their biaises. That requires us all to put our thinking caps on though… not such bad thing.

As an aside, those who fear Australia’s ‘left wing politics have bugger all ideas about what the ‘left’ truly is (reminds me of bygone ‘yellow peril’ racist scaremongering).
    In Unity.

  18. Fact Check is signing off today after 11 years at the ABC. As we move forward, we're entering a landscape where blatant lies may be reported as news, reminiscent of U.S.-style politics.
