  4. So, it turns out some #pilots get tubes placed in their ears to help with air circulation through their eustachian tubes during pressure changes. From what I understand the tubes fall out at 6 months. They are inserted via small hole in the ear drum. My QUESTION: is it safe to put in tubes multiple times? Do the tiny eardrum holes scar over each time, build up and affect hearing? Is there a limit to how many times tubes can be placed in?

  9. This article on #CochlearImplant argues postop antibiotics do not meaningfully change post-op infection rates within 2y of surgery.

I included it in our #otology/ #neurotology journal club tomorrow because it argues for a different position than what I do. Minor quibbles aside, I found the article convincing. Particularly during a post- #COVID abx shortage, I think I have to abandon postop abx except in select otology cases.

  11. I suppose I should do one of those #introduction things.

    I'm a #neurotologist--a surgeon of the lateral skull base and ear. I like all things #auditory, #vestibular, and #neuroradiology. I care a lot about my residents, and I'm currently an #otolaryngology Associate #ProgramDirector in #SanAntonio. I wear a uniform, but I'm not weird about it. I love #AcademicMedicine, #science, and #research, and I taught myself #Rstats. 1/3

  16. This is potentially awesome, life-changing news for anyone afflicted with #NerveDeafness ... It may have come along too late in life to help me, since it's still in the preliminary-research phase. But this made me very happy to read about! [Tip o'the hat to @researchbuzz for the news!]
