The event definitely seemed bigger this year - many many people. The crowd went nuts for OB. So much moshing and crowd surfing 😱

Okay, I could write a bunch of words for you to read about this punk rock/garage band and this, their first studio LP, but instead I highly suggest you watch their Tiny Desk performance from last year. Not only is half of the 8-song set taken from Itekoma Hits, but in 19-minutes you see just why Otoboke Beaver has been making waves for a few years. NPR describes their Tiny Desk performance as “an unhinged delight”, and that’s as good a description as any for this quartet in general. I mean, just as an example, during their performance of “Don’t Light My Fire” (track 9 on this album), the singer, breaking their intense stare that’s half Japanese variety show half extreme metal – and wearing a bright psychedelic print GoGo sheath mini dress with matching eye shadow and lipstick – climbs onto the desk, turns their back on the audience, and slaps their ass in time with chanting “Go. To. Hell.” If that isn’t enough to entice you, apparently their name translates to “An Idiot Beaver”, taken from a “love hotel” in Osaka and likely also alluding to the inspiration the band takes from manzai, a traditional style of Japanese comedy featuring super quick dialogue between a boke (the air-headed half of the duo) and a tsukkomi (the smarter but rather abusive half).
Otoboke Beaver will be opening for Foo Fighters on their European dates in June 2026.
