  1. Okay! Now it's time to shout! Never mind... No one today could match the voice of the man I'm about to mention.

    Birthday of Francesco Tamagno

Now, we go from Schipa on the 27th of December to Tamagno on the 28th. Talk about a polar extreme! But let's do this right.

On 28 December, 1851, Francesco Tamagno was born. To say he is unique is probably one of the biggest understatements in opera. Love it or hate it, his voice and style have not been truly equalled in 120 years! I first heard him quite awhile into my operatic journey. But because he is so different from all the other heroic and dramatic tenors whom I usually don't like, he's now in my regular rotation. Tamagno died quite young, at fifty-four, but he still left us with some intriguing and wonderful recordings. His voice could never be called beautiful, but his soul most definitely was. He raised his daughter as a single father, in the nineteenth century, while being a world-famous opera singer! They say he took her everywhere with him. That's worthy of being remembered and celebrated, even had he not been able to make recordings for us to enjoy. If I remember correctly, it was actually the husband of his daughter who played the piano on several of them. As always, if anyone has any anecdotes, interviews, etc. to share, please do so. Also, I heard that there is at least one recording of his that has never been found, but I forget what it is. Does anyone know?

Since he was the original Otello, it would be wrong of me not to include two of its most famous arias. I have been so spoiled by him in this role that I decided to listen to a full radio dramatisation of Shakespeare's Othello rather than Verdi's opera.

(The story goes that when he recorded this, it was so convincing that the engineer came over to him to make sure he was still alive! Considering his ill health from a heart condition, that actually makes perfect sense. But it also shows the power of an amazing performance.)

As much as I love the unissued take of Di Quella Pira, I am going to choose a different recording, since he sang it in French. It appears that, during his time, most singers just sang in their native tongue.
