Updated 8:14 PM UTC, July 7, 2026"The private prison company #CoreCivic has sold two of the largest immigration detention facilities in California to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in a deal worth $1.5 billion, the company announced Monday.
"CoreCivic said it anticipates that the sale of the #OtayMesa Detention Center in San Diego County and the California City Detention Facility in Kern County will bring the company an estimated net proceeds of approximately $1.1 billion.
The sale closed on July 2, according to a recent filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, with the federal government paying $739.2 million for the 1,994-bed Otay Mesa facility and $732.6 million for the newly-opened 2,560-bed California City facility."CoreCivic said in a news release that it expects to continue running the day-to-day operations of both facilities under existing management contracts with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The company acknowledged in its filing that the terms of those contracts could be renegotiated now that the federal government owns both properties outright.
"They also might not be renewed. CoreCivic’s contract in California City contract runs through August 2027, and its Otay Mesa contract is in effect through December 2029, with an option to extend for five more years.

Autoridades de EU procesaron a los exfuncionarios sinaloenses Enrique Díaz Vega y Gerardo Mérida Sánchez por presuntos vínculos con Los Chapitos.

Agencias de seguridad de Estados Unidos informaron sobre la detención en Europa de Enrique Díaz Vega, exsecretario de Administración y Finanzas de Sinaloa. El exfuncionario aceptó entregarse de forma inmediata a autoridades estadounidenses para enfrentar cargos federales. El caso se relacionó con investigaciones abiertas contra colaboradores del gobernador con licencia de Sinaloa, Rubén Rocha Moya.
De acuerdo con reportes, el general en retiro Gerardo Mérida Sánchez, exsecretario de Seguridad Pública de Sinaloa, también se entregó a autoridades estadounidenses en la frontera entre Tijuana y San Diego. La entrega ocurrió en la garita Otay Mesa, donde agentes federales formalizaron el procedimiento judicial. Ambos exfuncionarios aceptaron declararse culpables con el propósito de obtener reducciones de condena.
Las investigaciones estadounidenses incluyeron señalamientos sobre presuntos vínculos con una facción de Los Chapitos. Autoridades norteamericanas sostuvieron que las indagatorias involucraron operaciones relacionadas con tráfico de drogas y protección institucional. Los expedientes permanecieron bajo supervisión del Departamento de Justicia de Estados Unidos.
Investigación contra exfuncionarios
Fuentes relacionadas con el caso señalaron que Enrique Díaz Vega buscó acuerdos con autoridades estadounidenses mediante abogados especializados. El exsecretario intentó convertirse en testigo colaborador dentro del proceso judicial abierto contra Rubén Rocha Moya y otros excolaboradores. Sin embargo, las autoridades norteamericanas rechazaron inicialmente esa propuesta de cooperación.
Información obtenida por este medio indicó que Enrique Díaz Vega contrató representación legal para gestionar acercamientos con fiscales estadounidenses. El empresario de la construcción, quien acumuló una fortuna antes de incorporarse al servicio público, sostuvo contactos con especialistas en litigios internacionales. El proceso incluyó trámites y documentación requerida por el Departamento de Justicia de Estados Unidos.
Las autoridades estadounidenses mantuvieron abierta la investigación sobre presuntas operaciones vinculadas con grupos delictivos en Sinaloa. Los expedientes contemplaron declaraciones, registros financieros y presuntos vínculos entre funcionarios y estructuras criminales.
