    ✧ Opifex fuscus ✧

Opifex fuscus is a species of mosquito that is endemic to New Zealand. They occur along the coast, where their larvae live in rock pools within the spray zone. To survive in this habitat, the larvae are able to tolerate a wide range of water salt concentrations. The larvae feed on algae and decomposing matter. They also have mouthparts that specialise towards eith...

  4. Dunedin's David Hutchinson is five hours into an expected eight hour swim across New Zealand's Cook Strait. And he's doing it for a very good cause.

The physics professor and Otago Museum board chairman is raising money to install a new fire sprinkler system at Tūhura Otago Museum.

Channel some serious Dark Academia vibes with this dramatic black and white photograph of stunning Neo-Gothic architecture. This shot captures the intricate stonework, towering turrets, and shadowy archways of a historic building that looks like it was plucked straight out of a classic mystery novel or an ancient university campus.

It’s moody, atmospheric, and full of texture. This design is perfect for history buffs, architecture lovers, or anyone wanting to add a touch of mysterious elegance to their aesthetic.

  6. A case for organisations running their own ActivityPub servers

The internet has always been about standards, otherwise it simply would not work. The visibility of these for the average user has diminished as large platforms have monopolised activities on the web and run them with their own invisible data structures. Now the internet is the main form of communication there is a growing acknowledgement that organisations pushing updates to the internet need to do it in an open and and ideally internationally standardised format that allows it to […]

  7. Has anyone ever heard of the German-born artist Wolfgang Wasserlicht, aka 'The Rembrandt of the Road'?

I found this story about his life and work in the USA and New Zealand, but cannot locate any other references to the man himself, despite his work fetching high prices at auction.

Similarly, the Gallery Godelpus mentioned in the article doesn't seem to have any digital footprint.

    Leads most welcome...

  8. Moeraki Boulders lie scattered on Koekohe Beach in New Zealand, almost perfect spheres shaped over 60 million years. Māori legend calls them gourds from the canoe Araiteuru, washed ashore after a great wreck—where myth meets geology on the tide.

  9. Off Grid Energy Storage Using Recycled Electric Car Batteries

We would really like to one day run our backup servers, and maybe even some of our principle services from our location in #Wānaka, #Otago.

In order to make this feasible we will need a reasonable amount of off grid storage to ensure we can keep everything up in a power cut.

Gwilym’s 2016 Nissan Leaf blew a cell (or at least looking at #LeafSpy that appears to be what happened) a few months ago. This has lead to a roller coaster ride of What Ifs and Why Nots.

  13. The Otago Regional Council is switching from from first past the post, to STV (single transferable vote) for this year’s council elections. This aligns with the DCC system which has been working well for years.

Prof Janine Hayward has some good advice.

"After first past the post (FPP), there was a tendency among some people to rank every single candidate on the ballot sheet, but really that’s unnecessary."

⬆️ Yep. That was me, ranking climate deniers at number 40-something then being required to rank every other candidate in between.

"Put simply, if you don’t like the candidate, don’t rank them."

    Amen.

The glowing core of our galaxy rises between two spires in Otago, New Zealand. Seen in early June skies, the Milky Way arcs upward after sunset, revealing billions of stars. A moment of perfect timing and planning.

  15. The Port Chalmers road is full of container & logging trucks and the Port lacks storage space. Calder Stewart's announcement last week of a 200ha inland facility north of Milton, covered in solar, with direct connections to SH1 & the main trunk rail line. The rail connection will remove 10,000 heavy truck trips from the road each year. Even better, the entire $3bn project will be privately financed by Calder Stewart.

A few days later, Shane Jones announced the government was giving Port Otago and Dynes Transport an $8.2m loan for a competing plan to put an inland port in Mosgiel. This can only proceed if NZTA funds a heavy traffic bypass, which they’ve said they won’t do. And I’m sure Mosgiel folks don’t want a massive increase in trucking movements to clog their roads.

Whatever happened to ‘let the market decide’? Trust this coalition to back the wrong horse.

Here I'm helping rehabilitate a post-mine site, this means interpreting many legal documents, much drawing & modelling, then planting orders (and sometimes research), earthworks & time getting to know my site and all the people in and around it.
