Hello #Fediverse, today’s OS-tan is Windows 97-tan, a lesser-known OS-tan representing Windows 97 which does not exist as an actual OS (or it was as the first test version for 98, Windows Memphis Developer Release). Often called Nana-chan, she’s depicted as a cheerful little girl with brown hair styled in buns with braids.

There is a gag in the era of Windows 7 of her covering up the Kanji on her forehead except for the '7', trying to pass herself off as Windows 7-tan in hopes of rising from obscurity and gaining more recognition.

Although she represents a version of Windows that never officially released, Windows 97-tan has her own storage facility on older OS-tan image vaults.

Her first appearance remains unknown, but she has been suggested as the personified version of Windows 7 in certain translations

Did you know that the concept of "OS-tan" has existed way before even ME-tan was made?

Take OS Idol Win-chan as an example. Win-chan's earliest appearance in media seems to be from a promotional CD by Enterbrain, which dates back as early as October 1998. This would mean that Win-chan predates Me-tan by almost 5 years. It's not specified what Windows version she represents.

Another example can be Magical Toko-chan who is from around 1999. She seems to represent BSD, has a theme song called "Rainbow Holy☆Trident" and has a sister that represents Solaris.

There is also also another "Wintel Miku" although there’s little art of her. She seems to represent WindowsNT4.0/95/98 and was created as the creator was inspired by Mgaical Toko.

Besides Win-Chan, Magical Toko, Solaris-Chan and Wintel Miku all have sites dedicared to them!

In honor of Windows 8’s 12th anniversary which I missed (and not doing one of those posts for a long time), I'm doing one for Yū Madobe and Ai Madobe, the official mascots and OS-tans for Windows 8/8.1 who were created for special bundles by Windows Navi+ that came with some copies of Windows 8 during its launch in Japan, known as the Windows 8 Pro DSP Release Commemorative Packs.

Yū is the quieter older sister with a love for gadgets, a hidden Otaku at heart, and someone who thrives on the latest digital trends and has the shorter hair. Her younger sister, Ai, is cheerful and loves exploring what’s new and popular among junior high trends, especially anything tech-related and is the one with longer hair. Both share a birthdate of November 18, 1996, connecting them to the Windows lineage as distant relatives of Nanami Madobe! Fun fact: The sisters nearly tied in the 2012 Akihabara Moe Character Contest!

Many believe that one character was meant to represent Windows 8 and the other Windows 8.1 although both debuted well before anyone anticipated the release of 8.1. Another theory suggests one represents Windows 8, while the other stands for RT; however, both were actually featured in the promotion of Windows 8 Pro in the Commemorative Packs. Since they were also used to promote Windows 8.1 later on, it’s more accurate to view them as representing Windows 8 and 8.1 collectively.

Since they were also used to promote Windows 8.1 later on, it’s more accurate to view them as representing Windows 8 and 8.1 collectively.

Ever since I noticed that kbin went down, I looked for an alternative to it and found mbin, recreating the older kbin magazine for OS-tans on mbin.

That mbin magazine (https://fedia.io/m/osgijinka) is now the official mbin magazine thread for OS gijinkas and similar tech gijinkas on the fediverse.

Since I’m the same person who owned the old kbin magazine and the r/OStan subreddit I’ll most likely just cross post older posts from the subreddit there for now until I think of something original. I want to have this as the official fediverse alternative to the OS-tan subreddit at least ^^;;

Sometimes in an overly dramatic way, XP-kun is portrayed as a strong man in his late teens or early 20s. Like XP-tan, he too has long black hair and blue or dark grey eyes, but his hair is tied in a low ponytail, frequently braided, with a red bow. His chest bears a prominent scar in the shape of a "XP". Though most artworks show him shirtless, wearing only a collar, cuffs, and a long loincloth.

XP is a bold yet kind man who is generally a pleasant, laid-back individual who simply occasionally lacks clarity. Despite his might, he shows kindness for children and animals and appears to accept individuals for their true selves. He could be boisterous, but he's just happy.

He appears to be a man in his late 20s or early 30s with metallic cat ears, spectacles, and a circular blue hairdo. His eyes are blue-grey. The buttons on his light blue suit are the same hue as his tie.

He is quite proficient in both office and combat work, and he exudes a cool, collected, and professional manner. The majority of the individuals he spends time with are characters from the Nijiura and Futaba series, including his closest friend Eigyouseki and his romantic interest Daiginjou.

2K-kun enjoys spending time with his family, despite his busy schedule at the office. He is often seen in the company of Me-kun and XP-kun

3.1-kun is a man wearing a "3.1" medal on his right side and green uniform for the military from the Meiji era. He is seen as the older brother of NT-Mama, the uncle of 95-tan, and the younger brother of 1.0-tan and 3.1-tan. He has an elderly voice when he speaks. He has a DOS companion, just like his -tan counterpart, although his is a humanoid rather than a cat.

He retired with KanjiTalk 7.5-tan after the OS battles. Though he doesn't often appear, he would occasionally test his strength against 2K-kun and XP Pro-kun. Since 3.1-kun isn't shown off much in the fandom, little is known about him or his character. Since he doesn't antagonize other OSes, it's likely that he's retired comfortably or that his years of combat have left him with knowledge that longs for peace.

They represent the Mac OS X versions 10.0 through 10.4, respectively. They are Mac OS 9-tan and Mac OS 9-kun's younger brothers. This group, which frequently leaves out Reobo, consists of characters like Cheetah and Tiger, though rarely there is sometimes one for Mac OS X Leopard.

Mac OS 9-tan is very special to the OSX Cats; they treat her like a sister and gladly handle all household chores on her behalf. The OSX Cats are shown as a cheetah, puma, jaguar, panther, tiger, and leopard in the first image, from left to right.

They are quite tough and have had extensive training from KanjiTalk 7.5-tan. Little interaction occurs with other characters because all five of them always appear together. They lack organization and intelligence, and their distinctive personalities has not yet been fully developed.

He can also be spotted with Homeo, the other OSX-kuns, and occasionally Kyourou or ME-kun when he's not with her. In addition, he spends a lot of time with Kyuuki, a character from Nijiura and Futaba.

He normally wears an animal-patterned loincloth that matches his tail and ears, and on occasion he may have wraps on his hands or feet. Along with the other members of the OSX line, he also sports a scarf or cape and an apple-shaped eyepatch.

Most people think of her as an all-purpose OS-tan for Macintosh computers. Furthermore, she has a short temper and is prone to dramatic outbursts of extreme rage when angry. She may have originated to mainly represente pre-OS9 Mac OSes because several manga comics depicted her fighting Windows 95-tan during the OS-tan Wars, when only Classic Macs (such System 7.5) were available.

In her most common design she is seen with an apple on her head and a platinum-white bodysuit. She usually has blonde hair and blue-green eyes. The bomb that she typically carries, which is modeled after the typical Classic Macintosh error popup, is another noteworthy detail.

She is one of the many variations of the Windows Vista personifications.

Visbou is the youngest of the Vista siblings. She is naive and innocent for her age and doesn't show a negative side like her older sister, Vistake. She was given a ninja-like design because "one of the Vista logos looked like a shuriken."

Similar to how Vistake's characterization was a topic of controversy, Visbou is often disliked as an OS-tan who does not capture the characteristics of the OS. During her days of training as a ninja apprentice, she would speak with "～gozaru" at the end of her sentences. She is also the childhood friend of Reobo, who is one of the Mac OSX-kuns.
