Intermittent rain showers over the fire area help firefighters increase containment on the Oskawalik Fire (#122)

BY ALASKA DIVISION OF FORESTRY & FIRE PROTECTION on JULY 1, 2025

Rainfall and cooler temperatures across the fire area yesterday allowed firefighters to make good progress on increasing containment to 85% while securing the fire line on the 1,779-acre Oskawalik Fire, 4 miles south of Crooked Creek. As the fire perimeter becomes more secure, the crews will shift their attention to the mop up process looking for any residual heat or potential threats to the secured line.

As crews continue to meet suppression objectives, they will begin to assemble gear no longer needed on the fire line and back haul the supplies to the Crooked Creek airstrip for demobilization. Once the equipment is removed from the fire line it will be inspected and repaired and placed back in the fire warehouse for other incidents at what time it will be deployed to meet the needs of the firefighters on the ground...

Fire activities may continue to be visible to the community of Crooked Creek as aviation assigned to the fire assists with the demobilization of crews and supplies to the Crooked Creek airstrip while boats assigned to the fire will continue to shuttle firefighters along the Kuskokwim River corridor as they patrol for hot spots and secure the fire line.

Firefighters continue to make steady progress on the #OskawalikFire (#122) 9 miles south of Crooked Creek

BY ALASKA DIVISION OF FORESTRY & FIRE PROTECTION on JUNE 25, 2025

The Oskawalik Fire, is currently estimated at 1,800 acres and 70% contained. The fire, located just south of Crooked Creek, has shown minimal growth over the past 24 hours.

Crews are focused on securing the fire’s edge and putting out any remaining hot spots. On the west side of the fire, two crews have continued working towards each other, while a third is working from the fire’s starting point toward the west flank. Their goal is to maintain a 50-foot buffer zone around the fireβ€”currently, no heat is threatening to breach containment lines. As fire activity slows, crews have also begun backhauling equipment that’s no longer needed to help restore the area and minimize any lasting impact from suppression efforts.

The safety of firefighters and nearby communities remains the top priority. Residents are urged to stay updated through official channels and avoid entering the fire area.

Crews increase containment to 35% on the 1,779-acre Oskawalik Fire as they continue to mop up and patrol the fire’s perimeter

BY ALASKA DIVISION OF FORESTRY & FIRE PROTECTION on JUNE 23, 2025

The Oskawalik Fire (#122), burning 9 miles south of Crooked Creek continues to stay within the fire perimeter because of the diligence and hard work by firefighters assigned. The fire showed very little growth over the past day allowing fire managers the opportunity to increase containment to 35%.

The 64 firefighters on the incident will continue to mop up and patrol the fire perimeter with pumps and hose lays while being supported from the air by water dropping helicopters. As firefighters increase containment over the next few days, fire managers will begin to right size the firefighting operation and will begin releasing crews to other incidents throughout the state.

Smoke from the fire area may still be visible to the residents of Crooked River and people using the Kuskokwim River corridor, currently, the fire poses no threat to the public or structures near the fire.

Type 4 incident commander assumes command of the Oskawalik Fire today as fire activity is reduced from hard work on the ground

BY ALASKA DFFP on JUNE 22, 2025

The 1,779 acre Oskawalik Fire (#122), 9 miles south of Crooked Creek along the Kuskokwim River, exhibited very little growth over the past 24 hours allowing fire crews the opportunity to increase containment to 35%.

This morning, as containment efforts were met over the past few days and the fire complexity has been reduced, the current Type 3 organization managing the fire will turn the fire over to a Type 4 incident commander. The transfer of command will allow a smaller contingency of firefighters and fire managers to stay on scene will freeing up vital resources to be reassigned to other, more active fires across the Interior.

Today, the 70 firefighters assigned to the incident will continue to utilize a full suppression strategy while improving the containment lines that have successfully been constructed around the perimeter of the fire. As crews secure the fire line with hose lays, they will begin to utilize those hose lays to conduct mop up operations using water and hand tools as they look for any residual heat that may pose a threat to containment lines.

Smoke from the fire area may still be visible to the residents of Crooked River and people using the Kuskokwim River, but at this time, the fire poses no threat to the public or structures near the fire.
