@v_i_o_l_a One question was wheter one can still do sound/rigorous research when such a (commissioned) report has determined to be published (incl. press conference) on a specific date? - His answer was alogn the lines, that even if they can't by this deadline give the best answers, they can give better answers than others. #OSDMA24

so why are #students important as #actors of the #openscience movement? they are directly affected the the #replicationcrisis, they are the scientists of tomorrow, everyone at a university should by involbed, and students can support the cultural change towards open science.

last but not least Maximilian Frank from the Munich university LMU now talks about "Students as actors of the Open Science movement". after explaning shortly how german #students are organized he presents some exemplary #openscience projects driven by students, like a survey, an "authorship traffic light" and a new supervisor agreement for Bochum university.

session 2 of #OSDMA24 starts with a round of "German Reproducibility Network Member Lightning Talks". 1st in line: Malika Ihle ( @MalikaIhle) from & about @lmu_osc, the "LMU Open Science Centre – from local to systemic implementation: embedding open research in institutional practices". the centre wants to make it easy to "switch to open", e.g. with tutorials, train-the-trainer programs and "seedling" research groups.

the DeZIM is trying e.g. to realign traditional monitorings and reportings [and having them read and understood by the right people], which is a lot of (long-term) work, to put it mildly ... #OSDMA24

next, Frank Kalter, Professor of Sociology @unimannheim, is "Breaking Out of the Academic Bubble: Challenges and Experiences from Research on Migration, Integration and Racism".
a first challenge in researching migration in Germany is the fact that there are several institutes working on it. the "Deutsches Zentrum für Integrations- und Migrationsforschung" (DeZIM) has set up a network to bundle their activities: https://www.dezim-institut.de/. #OSDMA24

trying to "open science-ing" TDSEs comes with a lot of challenges!
a solution Marcus and his colleagues have found: "Large-scale Software Observatorium – LASSO". more details on that can be found in his slides that will be published later on the #OSDMA24 website.

next, Marcus Kessel, Postdoctoral Researcher at the Mannheim Chair of Software Engineering, will report on "Promoting Open Science in Test-Driven Software Experiments". in this field there is a "gap between ideal and reality", as software engineering (SE) "lags behind" in adopting open science principles. as an example Marcus presents an example from test-driven software experiments, TDSEs. #OSDMA24

two of the questions from the audience: did thinking about #openscience aspects also help Alex and his team with structuring the project? yes, it did! did they get any feed-back from the grant application reviewers on the open science plans? not specifically, but from the questions in the process they could tell that the reviewers had read it. :) #OSDMA24

Alex concludes that embedding #openscience principles is not only an important aim for researchers on its own merits, but a way to signal to funders that you are committed to best-practice research, and researchers can also show why their research has wider value, especially for scientists new to open science, access to expertise – like at an Open Science Office – is central for better grant applications, stronger projects – and better research. #OSDMA24

starting a round of 3 talks with insights in #OpenScience at @unimannheim Alex Spike Gibbs explains "How Open Science can make the difference for grant applications in History Research". he started out with not tooo much knowledge about OS. but he found "The solution – speaking to the Open Science Office"! :)
OS will be included in the project by a pre-registration of the research plan, FAIRness of the dataset, a searchable database, and #OpenAccess publications. #OSDMA24

David has outlined the many positive impacts #openscience can have on academia, but he did not hide the fact that there can also be negative effects. if somebody is relatively new to this area, he has given 3 tipps to get started. #OSDMA24
