#oscilloscopemusic — Public Fediverse posts

A little bonus for you as it's Bandcamp Friday... here's what my song, Scope Creep (from the album Steganogram), actually looks like on an oscilloscope, connected in XY mode. You can see the words appearing in three distinct bass notes.

I think the image is a bit fuzzy because I went via the headphone output, not the line out. I couldn’t find my cable!

This idea is also gnawing at me: Suppose you took the particles in one sequence, fed their X, Y coordinates into a DAC, advanced the simulation time and generated those particles' next positions and fed them into the DAC, etc. You'd get a waveform, and it'd have a fundamental frequency of however often you repeated the sequence. That's oscilloscope music, right?

That's what inspired the oscilloscope theme that appeared briefly in 🧵 22.

More fun with #OscilloscopeMusic - this time showing the effect a low pass filter has on text.

HOLY CRAP. I spent most of today writing code to write letters in oscilloscope music. I made a class that can set up characters in a grid, then make a WAV file containing the writing as X/Y vectors. It WORKED FIRST TIME. Not a single bug. That's astonishing, even for someone as detail-oriented as I am. I might break out the whisky and celebrate :D

P. S. "ABBA BABA" was The Who's entry for Eurovision.

@imigueldiaz Haha, yeah, if your brain isn't an #Oscilloscope and the hospital 🏥 refuses to lend you one of their heart monitors for visualising #OscilloscopeMusic , then it is indeed hard to hear the hidden #OscilloscopeArt , hehehe. 😅

But there is always YouTube to the rescue. 👇

#JerobeamFenderson isn't the only one doing this type of #MathArt, I highly recommend doing an 'oscilloscope music' search on YouTube for similar artists, you won't be disappointed. 🌐

With today's #TuneTuesday theme being #ElectricSongs. I think this is the perfect opportunity to introduce the #Fediverse to #OscilloscopeMusic and #JerobeamFenderson is probably the most famous artist in this niche.

#Oscilloscope is the device that displays the electric pulses of your heartbeat. 🫀 #Jerobeam explains in this short video how he turns electric pulses of music into 2D & 3D art images.

Please also watch his latest album 'N-Spheres', it's pretty amazing. ✅

Finally back to Oscilloscope-Music and here I used #synthmaster3 for the sound, spreading the phase of 4 voices to get interesting patterns in the X/Y view.
Adding a bit of Distortion in #Osci-Render.

I so love this! :-)

I managed to find the X-Y plotting function in my Rigol DA1202. But: the resulting image is smeared across the diagonal. Why? What do I beed to change to get a proper plot?

In this video, we concentrate our macro camera on the 70cm fresnel lens of the huge movie spotlight. It is quite fascinating how the individual rings bend the light and create another layer of form and movement.

"Metamorphosis"

This is the daylight version of the installation, where you can see the huge movie spotlight from the GDR state-TV station 'DFF' in all it's glory.

Sporting a 70cm fresnel lens, weighting in at 125kg, dating from 1970 and originally being equipped with a 20,000watt lightbulb, this really is a monster.

At the intersection of order and chaos, life happens.
States of energy spring into existence, fluctuate, collapse
And rise again in new configurations.

In this installation we back-project an oscilloscope screen onto a huge old GDR movie spotlights fresnel lens and bring it to life with a very special animation, made by sound.

#OscilloscopeMusic by Jerobeam Fenderson played on a Tektronix 465 at the VintageTEK museum in Beaverton, OR. The same signal is used for both the audio and the images so the music is the "sound" of the shapes.
