Durante su encarcelamiento en 'Reading Gaol', *Wilde* no solo escribió, sino que transformó la prisión en un teatro íntimo donde representaba para sí mismo y sus compañeros una tragicomedia de la vida y la injusticia.
Cuando en 1895 *Oscar Wilde* fue condenado a dos años de trabajos forzados por "indecencia grave", su mundo se redujo a una celda fría y oscura. Pero lejos de sucumbir al desánimo, *Wilde* convirtió ese encierro en un laboratorio creativo y un escenario privado.
Según testimonios de guardias y compañeros de prisión, *Wilde* organizaba pequeñas representaciones teatrales improvisadas, donde él mismo interpretaba personajes de sus obras y creaba monólogos que mezclaban humor, ironía y una profunda melancolía. Estas actuaciones no eran para un público externo, sino para mantener viva su mente y espíritu en medio de la brutalidad carcelaria.
Durante su tiempo en prisión, *Wilde* escribió «De Profundis», una larga carta dirigida a su amante *Lord Alfred Douglas*. Pero lo que pocos saben es que esta carta no fue solo un texto para ser leído; *Wilde* la recitaba en voz alta, modulando su tono como si fuera un actor en un escenario. La escritura se convirtió en su forma de resistencia, un acto performativo que le permitía desafiar la soledad y la humillación.
Además, en la prisión, *Wilde* comenzó a trabajar en «La balada de la cárcel de Reading», un poema que no solo denuncia la crueldad del sistema penitenciario, sino que también refleja su capacidad para encontrar belleza y humanidad en el sufrimiento. El poema fue escrito con una mezcla de rabia y compasión, y se convirtió en un himno para los presos olvidados.
Una anécdota poco conocida relata que *Wilde*, en un acto de desafío y teatralidad, pidió que le permitieran conservar un collar de perlas y una rosa roja durante su encarcelamiento. Estos objetos, símbolos de su identidad y su amor por la belleza, se convirtieron en sus amuletos personales. Los guardias, desconcertados, accedieron, y *Wilde* los exhibía en su celda como un rey en su trono, recordando que aunque preso, su espíritu seguía siendo libre y extravagante.
Al salir de prisión en 1897, *Wilde* estaba físicamente destruido y socialmente desterrado. Se exilió en Francia, donde vivió sus últimos años bajo el nombre de *Sebastian Melmoth*, un alter ego que reflejaba su caída y su renacimiento. Murió en 1900, a los 46 años, en la pobreza y el olvido.
