Finally tore down my 12x5 ortho keyboard and figured out why the 'a' key was not cooperating. For some reason, there seemed to be some debris around that key's solder joints. As counterintuitive as this sounds for a circuit board, I wiggled it ever so slightly, cleaned out whatever dust was there, and now it's back making contact - yay!

Now I get to re-train my muscle memory *back* to this keyboard from my 12x4 layout, which is missing a whole number row. Even the arrow keys have a different layout, so that's gonna be fun.

Ok, I ended up going with the Glove80 ergonomic keyboard. I've not spent this much on a keyboard before, so my hopes are high on this purchase.

I did some research before I pulled the trigger. Originally, I was leaning towards the Kinesis Advantage 2 or 360, but after reading some reviews and YouTube videos, I went with the Glove80.

I think that's a very personal thing. I tried a little bit, but didn't get used to the Pocket Reform typing experience yet, sadly. I think best way would be to meet up somewhere with some #pocketreform owner and just try typing on it. Or get a similar shaped USB connected #ortholinear keyboard and practice with it.

Finished my new keyboard! it’s an evolution of my old keyboard with some function keys and media keys moved to the top right so I stop pressing mute instead of ctrl! It is a little taller than I like but the design I layered so I think I can shave off at least 5mm without too much hassle (probably more!)

Woof! That was a hell of a session! Just need to trim off a little bit of rod in the middle columns and then I can start soldering up the microcontroller. Unfortunately it’s a little too late to turn on the Dremel! Absolutely in love with using copper rods instead of wire though, it’s sooo pretty!

Wanted to play some games recently. Apparently, changing key bindings is not a solved problem in '25. Both No Man's Sky ('16-'25) and Cyberpunk 2077 ('20-'24) have the option to rebind the keys, but ultimately both fail and use the default keys for some of the most common actions. The former is at least still very much playable, the latter not so much.

This is probably the biggest downside of my #ortholinear #4x12 #keyboard layout. Having Enter, Control, etc. in the center makes WASD not viable

so I've been using an #ortholinear 40% keyboard with #colemak layout (all 3 things are a first for me) for 10 days, doing a bit of programming, and testing my typing speed every day

I'm now finally hitting 100 cpm, which is, i feel, roughly 60% of my typing speed before the switch

the first week was harsh. i knew where the keys were, but my fingers just wouldn't hit them

I wish we could see more of the keyboard underneath. It looks like it has really cool keycaps!

I'd need the same number of keys (76), including two columns of verticals in the middle. I could compromise on putting 2*5 keys from the thumb blocks on a separate layer.

Die einzigen beiden mehr oder weniger ortholinearen Keyboards mit denen ich gut klarkomme, sind das #Zlant (eigentlich "uniform staggered", sieht aus wie ein jeweils um 0.25u verschobenes #Planck) und das vorhin schon genannte semi-ortholineare #Alpha28, weil da das X rechts unter dem S ist.

Trying my first planck-like/40% ortholinear build, it's a cstc40 from kprepublic running qmk. Currently with gateron black that came by mistake, soon with either brown or purple.

Impressive! I guess that should help you adapt a lot.

If you're interested in better comfort/health, you could visit a #MechanicalKeyboard meetup in your area & try any #ortholinear keyboard (where rows are not staggered, but keys are in nice columns). Even if it's not split or contoured, that should give you an impression whether it'll screw you or could work well.

IMO, the absolute worst is row staggered & positively tilted & non-split & flat. Killing any of those = improvement.
