At the end of the month I am giving a talk at the State Library Victoria about the new orphan works scheme in the Copyright Act and why libraries and other cultural organisations should know about it. 6. Woah, the Copyright Amendment Bill 2026 passed the Senate today meaning Australia will very soon (the day after it receives the Royal Assent) have a scheme limiting remedies available when users use orphan works (copyright materials for which the copyright owner cannot be identified or located). This has been a long time coming so it is amazing to see it pass!

  9. How to stop video games being made unplayable once support ends

The Pirate Party has long played an important role in fighting the worst excesses of copyright in the EU. For example, when a major copyright update was being discussed, the Pirate Party MEP Felix Reda wrote an insightful and practical report on what needed changing. Most of his recommendations were ignored in the final EU Copyright Directive, but at least someone […]

  15. CW: Long thread/3

After 55-75 years, only 2% of works have any commercial value. After 75 years, it declines further. No wonder that so much of our cultural heritage is now #OrphanWorks, with no known proprietor. Extending copyright on all works - not just those whose proprietors sought out extensions - incinerated whole libraries full of works, permanently.
