The Oroville Dam and Lake Oroville. This is a big ass dam, the tallest dam in the US, completed in 1968. A big story, in February 2017, the main and emergency spillways threatened to fail, leading to the evacuation of 188,000 people living near the dam. The Lake Oroville Visitors Center has a great exhibit about the emergency. Tom @tomm had the excellent idea that we should go up to Oroville and see the new repaired spillway in action, still releasing 15000 ft3/sec to keep up with all the recent storms and more on the way. The amount of energy in that falling water is incredible; we got drenched without even getting very close. #CAwx #OrovilleDam #LakeOroville

trying to find video of #OrovilleDam spillway today. they were supposedly going to up the release to 35000 cfs.

But the birdsite insists. that "Orville" is close enough. and so it's just stuff about some Japanese pop icon with that name.

The California Department of Water Resources says "Releases from #OrovilleDam to the Feather River were increased to 20K cfs today and will increase to 25K cfs tomorrow due to heavy inflows into #LakeOroville. We will continue to adjust releases based on ongoing weather conditions and #flood control guidelines set by the @USACEHQ"

We don't get much rain in #NorCal, but sometimes we do. There have been plenty of heavy downpours in recent years like the one in 2017 that broke the #OrovilleDam. But this new #BombCyclone feels like it's a bit more extra. Best wishes! #CAwx
