    But on the 19th my #GMN Global Meteor Network cameras still managed to pick up a few Orionids (almost 100 between the 2 cams).

    Also picked up a few meteors from other showers including: Epsilon Geminids
    Leonis Minorids
    Chi Taurids
    Southern Taurids.

    It is a relatively busy time of year for meteor showers.

  13. We're past the peak of the #orionid #meteor shower so here's a quick round up of what UKMON saw on their cameras:

    21,000 individual detections by 191 cameras across the UK. Half of these were matched between stations and led to 1672 confirmed Orionids. The brightest was mag -3.3. These numbers are roughly the same as last year, though of course the shower isn't fully over yet. More info here:

    Next up, the Taurids, with the southern branch peaking around the 30th (...)

  22. Did you guys also know that #comets aren't special and aren't traveling any faster than any other #asteroid or other object out there, and they're not hot or on fire?

    They're actually ice #balls, and the #sun makes the ice evaporate and then the solar wind (particles from the sun) blows that "atmosphere" away from the sun, creating the tail.

    The tail doesn't even have anything to do with the direction that the ice ball is moving! The tail blows away from the sun. That's it.

    A comet is literally a solar windsock.

    Why did they never teach us this in school? Why did they allow us to think that comets were special fireballs moving at the speed of light across the galaxy?

  26. I was hoping to catch some of the #Orionid meteor shower tonight, but as I was setting up and doing test shots, it started clouding over.

    But here's quite a clear shot, before the clouds got in the way, of #Jupiter (that bright thing towards the top right) and the #Pleiades (the cluster of stars towards the top left).
