I think one of my gripes with #Fediverse is that despite of being a niche place, it still doesn't have the range to start certain specific communities. Yes, there are places especially made for the LGBTQ+ community, for #furries, for nerds of much older shows, etc., however, the community I'm part of is non existent here.
Lemme explain.
I'm part of the Kirby Fan Character community, kinda like Sonic OCs but themed around the #Kirby lore and enemies. There are two different sides here, one from the Western community where we call 'em #KirbyFC (and yes, KFC for short lol), and the Eastern community, where they have their own tag, #Orikabi (オリカビ), short for Original Kirby.
For many years, both sides were doing their own things, the western side being more focused on Sprite Animations and #fanfiction and the eastern side in full artworks and short comics and doujin.
But recently in the last years, we have developed a more closer relationship between both sides thanks to Twitter, basically merging into one big community for Art, Animation and Music based around our Kirby characters, having even doing collabs and talking more with each other in discord severs.
If i keep talking, i would have to explain 13 years (and even more after discovering archived websites with fan characters over the years in the Internet Archive) of everything we have made and participated. My point is that the Fediverse seems to be aimed to an older neurodivergent demographic, which i find thats the reason why younger people find this place a tad more intimidating unless you find a space for your hobbies, like programming and game developing. If you want an example, i have yet to see a single Sonic OC in the fediverse 'casually' while scrolling, and not having to search it by myself with a tag. Usually, that type of communities is seeing in more mainstream places like Deviantart, Twitter, Tiktok and Pixiv, but not here. Is it still a bit early for these groups to be here? Who knows. Only time will tell.
