  1. A little bit obsessed by this album by Hayden Thorpe about Orford Ness where they used to shake bombs to see if they went off…

An old petrol pump and the ever present fences posts without a fence on #OrfordNess .

  3. 3/5 Orford Ness #infrared

Looking across #OrfordNess towards the buildings used in its last phase of weapons research - these were used in the nuclear programme to develop the conventional explosive triggers.

Looking into one of the ruined buildings once used for atomic weapons research (though it was the non-radioactive side).

I like the way that the two poles - one long, one short - lean away from each other as nature reclaims them both.

  7. 1/5 #OrfordNess

Orford Ness - on the #Suffolk coast was for many years used for weapons research. It's on the end of a long spit of land and best reached by boat. It's now NationalTrust, who run it as both a nature reserve and historic site. It's bleak and remote, and I love it.

You're not allowed off the path here for fear of unexploded ordnance. The antennae are still used by a private company.

  8. Visting my relatives in #Caversham again and listening to #RadioCaroline on the #Philips D-2122 #receiver from #Malaysia before bed - some QRM from a Spanish PSB and fading, but the 648 KHz signal from #Orfordness is getting across 186 km #radio #AM #MW

  9. I wonder why the solar power generation from the Radio Caroline site at #Orfordness drops off quickly in early evening, even though its still sunny in Mid Suffolk? Maybe there's some meterological phenomenon closer to the coast, that creates more cloud cover shielding the solar panels?

  10. The eerie emptiness of 'Britain's Area 51'

Orford Ness is now one of Britain's most protected natural landscapes. For decades, however, it was the hidden nerve centre of secret military research.

  11. You can see here why from 1943 to 2018 the #BBC picked #Caversham (on the border of #Reading #Berkshire and South #Oxfordshire) as a good place for #radiomonitoring (it is high up on the Chiltern hills). The signal from Radio Caroline (250 km away at #Orfordness, #Suffolk) just about reaches here by night, and signals from a 500 kW TX which is apparently at Beijing at 8180 km away are quite strong..

  12. Just discovering some wonderful #thomasdolby videos on #youtube. Saw him live once - he was incredible. Never got to see his #theinvisiblelighthouse tour - fantastic #trailer here youtu.be/BFxbkZqznB0 - focusses on the #orfordness #lighthouse and even refers to the #rendlesham forest incident so fantastically covered by my friend @Paul_Hill here: pca.st/episode/4d5247de-bd35-4

  13. Trevor from #Kilmarnock #Scotland has restored this Kendy TR-612, 6 Transistor pocket #radio - it now comfortably picks up Radio Caroline at night, at a distance of 560km (348 miles) from the #Orfordness transmitter..
