  2. Dass #Wirbeltiere einschlafen und wieder aufwachen, liegt am #Orexin-System – so dachte man zumindest bislang. Ein Trio um @schierlab vom @biozentrum der @unibasel stellt diese Annahme jetzt infrage. Karin Lauschke erklärt uns, warum genau: laborjournal.de/editorials/300 #Schlaf

"not all #vertebrates regulate their sleep-wake rhythm in the same way... some #fish—unlike humans—do not need #orexin to stay awake. This molecule was thought to be necessary for normal wake and #SleepRhythms in vertebrates. Humans without orexin suffer from #narcolepsy."

  14. For #neuropeptide afficionados:
Interesting new paper from James Checco's lab on two #Aplysia #allatotropin / #orexin receptors, one activated by a D-peptide the other one by an L-peptide.
Conversion of an L-stereoisomer to a D-stereoisomer is a big mystery in peptide biology - but it matters for rec specificity and lifetime.
