  1. A forest in the middle of a shopping district.

"[H]ere, in the overgrown no man’s land bordered by Orchard Turn, Orchard Boulevard and Orchard Link, there is only the brief fluttering of wings and swaying of branches.

It is a curious space: a rare parcel of prime real estate, left untouched since the 1950s, in a country where liminal spaces are often pulverised by pragmatism."

  6. A big part of the Singaporeanness associated with ice cream sandwiches is the uncle behind the cart & their importance in Singaporean culture as one of many icons. There were once countless ice cream carts along Orchard Road, but today there are 4-5 left & you can always find them as the sun shines 365 days a year, basically.

  11. Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia)

After photographing the American Goldfinch, I wandered through the open grassy spaces of the municipal complex. It was quiet and still, except for the occasional rustle of leaves. The grounds are more spacious than they appear from the road, but my curiosity pulled me toward the edge—where the mown lawn gave way to wildness.

There, at the boundary, a thicket of shrubs tangled around the trunks of a few tall trees. On the other side, I could see a line of houses. A dog barked once and then stopped. It was the kind of quiet that makes bird sounds carry.

That’s when I heard it—a sharp, sweet burst of melody. The Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia) is often easier to hear than to see, and this one was no exception. I paused and scanned the underbrush. It took a minute, but eventually, I spotted the sparrow perched on a bare twig, puffed up and singing with its whole body.

These are the moments I love most—when something ordinary becomes radiant through attention. A common bird, a simple place, and yet, it felt like a discovery.
