The Orang Asli’s Land Rights Gap
The Orang Asli, Peninsular Malaysia’s indigenous minority at 0.7 percent of the population, hold no land rights under national land or forestry laws. Their protection, the 1954 Aboriginal Peoples Act, lets government gazette or degazette reserves at will, a privilege not a right. Communities turn to litigation, winning rulings recognizing native title, though each requires proving occupation from arbitrary dates, pushing some to blockade land. #orangasli

One of my "relatives" in #Sarawak #Malaysia (an auntie who is close to our family but not actually a blood relative) had "sup ular tempoyak" yesterday ( #snake soup with fermented #durian condiment )
At least one #python went into the soup, which can contain other species such as Indo-Chinese ratsnake and even the #cobra
It might taste better than it sounds, but I thought it was discouraged to eat the sneks (they are becoming rarer in some areas!) - although this auntie was visiting #OrangAsli folk as part of World Indigenous People's Day, they seem to be allowed to eat a few snakes (the rest which get too near to where humans live are caught alive by the Fire Brigade and released elsewhere)
