  1. inspired by:

    • the luminous red nova of the monoceros (unicorn) constellation (v838 monocerotis) [1]

    • cactus blossoms, especially saguaro [2] and prickly pear [3, 4]

    • snakes as mythological bringers of life and light (hail satan :black_sparkling_heart:)

  2. When I have room for more plants, I would love to grow spineless prickly pears in the house! (Such as Opuntia Ellisia.) It would be nice to have houseplants that double as a food source. #food #cactus #Opuntia #nopales

  3. A prickly pear cactus (Opuntia engelmannii 'O') in the snow. It's not native here, but to the southwest, northern Mexico and the U.S. east to Dallas. This selection is from the eastern end of the range where it is wet in the winter. I planted this in the fall and am crossing my fingers -- it got quite wet this winter.

    I, té virtuts medicinals.

  5. Prickly Pear (Opuntia) Fruit Beginning to Ripen in the Garden This Week

As summer winds down, the prickly pear cactus (Opuntia) is starting to ripen its fruit. I have 5 large cacti in the front and back garden, and they have reached maturity, so our harvest of fruit has been growing each year. Today, I spotted over 40 fruits at various stages of ripening. I am guessing they will all be ready for harvest once I return from a 2-week trip to Australia in September.

  6. @margamp

  7. More prickly pear processing!

This time I made all the decisions so I’m quartering them and stewing them with no other ingredients. Ideally fresh lemons, but probably just some citric acid if I can find some.

I really miss having access to a steam juicer as this would be the correct tool. Food mill and chinois will do.

Also the colloquial American name for chinois is still “china cap”

  8. I suppose the other pictures are interesting as well. All the skin and seed waste is going into the wash and the end of our front yard for the quail and friends to nom on. Hopefully sprout a couple of new stands of opuntia

  9. @thebiologistisn my Opuntia (not sure about the species but yellow flower) was blooming last week. It has been living on a my glazed balcony, also during the winter season. Minimum balcony temperature was around -16C this year.

  10. Most productive and useful garden crop for my part of Southern California, by far... prickly pear cactus.

    1. Produces more pads (nopal) than I can possibly eat. Perpetual, near infinite source of vegetable matter all year.

    2. Prickly pear fruit available in summer... with enough prickly pear, WAY MORE than you can eat. You can make it into a jelly, or into wine. And probably other stuff.

    3. Can be used to cultivate cochineal for red/purple coloring, if you're into natural fiber weaving or crafts.

    4. Grows on a hot hill without water where NOTHING ELSE LIVES.

    5. Fire buffer plant. Almost entirely water.

Probably more benefits I don't know about!
