    U2, Songs of Surrender, 2023 on Island

    This album features re-recordings of U2's own songs, re-interpreted from their 2023 vantage point. It was something of an accompanying record to Bono's memoir (Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story) and the AppleTV documentary Bono: Stories of Surrender. The vinyl editions (2 x LP) only have 16 songs, where some of the other editions had more (40 songs on the 4 CD version) but I wanted to have it on vinyl.     U2, How to Re-assemble an Atomic Bomb, 2024 on Island

    Let's see if the title gets flagged by the bots. This was the "shadow album" released alongside the 20th anniversary edition of How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb and features songs from the sessions for that album. Basically any U2 vinyl I don't already have (or don't need an upgrade copy) is on my wantlist, so I was happy to find this copy—via Residency Records in Salem MA. It's an Optimal GmbH pressing on red & black marbled vinyl.

    Green joined here by Blue Mitchell (trumpet), Claude Bartee (tenor sax), Emmanuel Riggens (organ), Jimmy Lewis (bass), and Idris Muhammad (drums) plus Richard Lendrum (bongos) and Candido Camero (congas). Recorded in 1970 by Rudy Van Gelder in Englewood Cliffs, NJ. My copy—via Salem Flea Marketplace—is the 2023 Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series reissue, mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio and pressed at Optimal, which sounds (and looks) great.

    Oscar Peterson, “Motions and Emotions,” 1970 on MPS

    Oscar Peterson covering “popular” tunes, including “Yesterday,” “Eleanor Rigby,” and “Ode to Billy Joe.” I know some folks will find this schmaltzy but as an Oscar Peterson fan I really enjoy it.

    My copy is the 2018 reissue in the Ambassadors for MPS series, on 180g vinyl pressed at Optimal GmbH and an insert reproducing the original master tape box along with liner notes by Till Brönner, the ambassador to MPS in this case.

    Hancock is joined by Paul Chambers, Willie Bobo and Chihuahua Martinez—though it’s not really what you’d call a Latin jazz album so much as post-bop or modal.

    Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder at his Englewood Cliffs studio.

    David Byrne & St. Vincent, Love This Giant, 2012 on 4AD

    Two of the most creative and eclectic artists and musicians collaborate here on a brass-band heavy record. (St. Vincent also contributed to Here Lies Love, Byrne’s collaboration with Fatboy Slim – a concept album / rock musical about Imelda Marcos).

    The Dap-Kings and the Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra join on “The One Who Broke Your Heart” and John Congleton co-produced with Byrne, St. Vincent (Annie Clark), and Patrick Dillett.

    Fantastic album – unexpected but once you get to know it you can’t imagine how it could be any better.

    My copy (based on runouts) is a somewhat later pressing (indeterminate) with markings from both Optimal Media GmbH and United Record Pressing – via Electric Fetus in Minneapolis MN
