β§ Adularescence β§
Adularescence is an optical phenomenon that is produced in gemstones like moonstone. It is best described as a milky, bluish luster or glow originating from below the surface of the gemstone. The luster, appearing to move as the gemstone is turned or as the light source is moved, gives the impression of moonlight floating on wa...

White blood cells
If you had said that itβs possible to see white blood cells with the naked eye, I wouldnβt have believed you. If you had somehow convinced me, Iβd have then been impressed. But never would I have thought that itβs possible to see your own white blood cells in your own eye. Aye, βtis true!
The blue field entoptic phenomenon is an entoptic phenomenon characterized by the appearance of tiny bright dots (nicknamed blue-sky sprites) moving quickly along undulating pathways in the visual field, especially when looking into bright blue light such as the sky.
~ Wikipedia from, Blue field entoptic phenomenonslip:4uwiwi1.
Is the takeaway here that youβve just learned something? β¦or that wonders never cease? β¦or something else entirely?

Had to get up early today to do some outside stuff, was worth it to see this bad boy.

I saw two solar halo phenomena in high clouds but I only managed to cap one. I think it's a 46Β° halo, but they're rare so maybe it's a colourless infralateral arc?
I've already capped double sundogs and a weak 22Β° halo this year so I'm on a roll.#AtmosphericOptics #OpticalPhenomenon #OpticalPhenomena #halo #IceHalo #SolarHalo #46DegreeHalo #Cirrus #Cloud #Clouds ? #InfralateralArc ?

Thrilled to have this sighting of an #IceHalo, #CircumhorizontalArc, at the French River Delta, Key River, #GeorgianBay #Ontario Canada. The bright spectrum colored band, parallel to the horizon, is a refraction of the sun on the ice crystals in the cirrus or cirrostratus clouds when the sun is at its highest which was at 12:00 noon.

So, @stylo_the_unicorn nudged me to post images of the glass bottle shard I found, which to my eyes appears opaque dark blue but when held to the light seems a transparent mid green. There's no direct sun through the thick altocumulus stratiformis opacus clouds (sorry, I collect clouds) so capturing an image was difficult and, interestingly, the camera's colour correction software is processing glass that looks green to my eyes as a redder-browner colour. Any explanation of the apparent colour change in the glass, please?

Eclipse photography 3/4
I will admit, when the cloud moved away just in time, all of nature grew silent, and the shadow of the moon arrived, I secretly wished someone had cued Also sprach Zarathustra.
The eclipse was magnificent and moving. Planning a year in advance, so that we could be standing directly in the path of the shadow cast by a celestial body 220,000 miles awayβ¦ I canβt describe it. Moving. Exciting. Awe-inspiring. Fun! Getting to see and do cool science experiments you only read about. Sure, in celestial terms, our little moonβs shadow flits across our blue mote many MANY times. But I count myself among the lucky ones who took the time to align my life β even if ever so briefly β with these majestic orbs.

Eclipse photography 2/4
The mostly eclipsed solar disk is in the middle of this photoβ just a bit above the center. Normally, at this stage of the eclipse, the partly exposed solar disk would cause retina damage if you look at it directly. But thanks to this cloudβ¦ ok, fine, yes, clouds donβt block UV light so looking at this is a BAD idea. I looked quickly. A few times. It was TOTALLY worth it. Here, you can look all you want, but you might need to zoom in a bitβ¦
The entire eclipse was very βbusyβ. It was clear, then some clouds, then clear, a cloudβ¦ the viewing conditions changed second-by-second. Truly a rare event to see.

Eclipse photography 1/4
This photograph best captured the mood and lighting, just as the eclipse began, when these wispy clouds slid before the show. It gave us a welcome variation from trying to stare directly at the naked sun.

More spectacular shots from the plane
As I mentioned earlier, the first flight left before dawn provided an extended (because flying westward) pre-dawn and sunrise show. When I fly, I always try to look for optical phenomenon and this flight was the most spectacular I have ever seen.

Almost dark enough to see the stars #Airplanes #BeltOfVenus #OpticalPhenomenon #Sunrises -
Inconceivable!
Two panoβs squeezed out the window. Diff exposures, no filters. Some distortion from jet bumps and window etc. Looking south. On far right you can see the βwedgeβ of the Earthβs shadow projected up onto the lower edge of the sky. On the left you can see the southern side of the sunrise. From this altitude, you clearly get the sense of how this color βshowβ rotates around that south point in the middle of the photo; Like a two panel beach ball, with these spectacular colors where the two hemispheres meet. Of course, the sky and sun arenβt movingβ¦ ;) Flying westward this show lasted so much longer than when you are standing still.

Optical phenomenon
WOW! Westward flight left pre-dawn and I was treated to the most spectacular sunrise and Belt of Venus (wikipedia it!) I have even seen! These are two photos of diff exposures. No filters. Iβve never seen GREEN like this. More to come! Also: GOOD MORNING CHICAGO (just for a layover thoβ)

North Atlantic and Mediterranean
Apropos of Veterans Day, hereβs a dozen 35mm slides my father took in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean in 1965.
Aboard USS Furse (DD882) somewhere in the North Atlantic. Bruce striking a pose in front of the gun director he operated. Too cool for school! His patented, Iβm-not-laughing-chuckle Passing the Rock of Gibraltar. βHey girlβ¦β Spain, maybe? Overlooking Genoa Italy. Also, overlooking Genoa Italy. Ever the clown, posing on a taxi on Malta.Ι
