TechCrunch: If you use Google, you’re training its AI. Here’s how to opt out.. “Consider this a belated PSA: A recent change to Google’s privacy settings is allowing the company to store more of your data, including media such as ‘images, files, and audio and video recordings,’ to improve its AI models. Kagi: July 2nd, 2026 – Heads, tails, and an AI toggle. “We’ve added an option to disable access to AI features in search, under settings/ai. We’re also planning to add this option to onboarding, so new users can personalise their Kagi experience from the start. It’s finally here! We believe that Kagi’s application of AI should always be useful – there when you’d like it, and never when you […]

Lemme use a metaphor.
Comic books are opt-in. I've lived more than 40 years on this planet (and less than 50 ... I'm very nearly smack dab in the middle of that).
Never once has a legitimate comic book subscribed me to it without me taking specific actions in order to receive it.
I will receive junk mail whether I want to or not. All I have to do is live in this gawdawful country with an address and I will, at minimum, receive junk mail addressed to "Resident." Junk mail is opt-out. At best. I don't think you can stop the ones marked "Resident."
Is your service opt-in? Is it really? Do people have to go take a positive action in order to engage it? If not, then it's not opt-in.
(This is a very clearly labeled metaphor. Not the time to tell me about Chick Tracts or whatever other edge case you've got. Although, if your "reply guy" reply is funny to me, the results are less likely to be salty.)

Search Engine Roundtable: Google AI Overviews Tests Button To Go To Only Web Results. “Google is testing a button in the AI Overview within Google Search that takes you to the web only tab. As a reminder, the web only tab does not have any AI search features or other search verticles, it only has the web search results.” I’d like a button that turns the AI off entirely. If anything has proven the folly of #optout systems, it is the fact that robots.txt and spiders.txt are no longer respected by the plagiarism engines stealing the sum total of human knowledge in order to corrupt it and sell it back at a 10,000% markup.
Opt-out systems are ephemeral, and only operate as long as the aggressor chooses to respect it, which is to say, 'until they can get away with not doing so'.

"Just opt out" is also the refrain of the unsolicited commercial emailer, the "AI" content scraper, and the politicians who exempt themselves from unsolicited advertising rules.
It is my firm opinion that one should not *have* to opt out of this kind of activity, because it should be opt-in from the start.

This new "tags.pub" instance that just blasts out boosts of anything with a matching hashtag is ... annoying.
Pointless.
Practically abuse.
It just boosted a post of mine with *seven* different accounts. Didn't ask for permission to follow/do things with my content.
Its account overviews say "You can opt out!", which is absolutely *not* how bots should be interacting with people in the Fediverse. This should be opt-*in* only.
How is this okay? Frankly, I think it should be completely defederated, it's not operating in good faith.
