Beware of long-term, "price won't go up" contracts for Internet and telecom services. Short-term telecom and data contracts are consistently better for your company. Here's why.

Before I get to the “why,” PLEASE NOTE – this post is about business services, not your personal cell phone.

Okay, now I’ll give you the “why.”

Since the start of telecom data services, these two statements have been true:
1) Prices continually go down
2) Value continually goes up

In other words, if you could buy n-Gbps for $300.00/month in a given year, a couple of years later you could buy 2n-Gbps for the same amount. The problem comes about when you have a three year contract, and you’re stuck with n-Gbps for the third year. (Most carriers will let you upgrade to take advantage of new features and services, but you’re required to stay with them in order to do so. You can’t change carriers, even if a competing carrier has a sweeter deal).

Fiber, copper, voice, data – more often than not, upper management wishes they hadn’t signed that five year contract when they’re about two years into it. They’ll typically cut the contract short by “trading up,” but their options are limited because they can’t afford to shop the competition.

Don’t give the carrier control of your company. Retain your autonomy, and control of your company’s future, by signing telecom contracts for a maximum of two years. By the second quarter of year two, start shopping so you’ll know if you should stay or change.
