  3. Exciting news, I got a new #blog 🎉

It's about #BSD! Already having a Linux blog, so time for one dedicated to the BSDs 😍

I can't share the link yet... One reason is that I'm careful to share it on Mastodon, until it is indexed by the search engines. Had issues with another blog and I have a feeling it was due to the decentralized nature of Mastodon that it got a penalty.

First long-read article is about setting up your own mail server with #OpenBSD and #OpenSMTPD. 1/*

  5. Now working on the #OpenBSD article to set up your own mail server with #OpenSMTPD, #Dovecot, #Rspamd including tips for #unwind and #unbound.

The good: I already have my text in Dutch
The bad: translating takes a while
The ugly: I want to complete it today...

  9. @tgeusch I switched from #postfix to #openSMTPD about a year ago, and from #mailman3 to #mlmmj . Both are less flexible (powerful), but the simplified configuration is definitely worth it for my relatively simple needs. I kept #rspamd for DKIM and filtering, and it all works quite well.

  11. Question for those who #selfhost their email servers - has anyone migrated from #postfix to #openSMTPD?

I've been running Postfix for more than a decade on the primary MX, but it frankly feels overkill for a relatively simple multi-domain setup for essentially just hosting my family's email.

I'm already running openSMTPD on #OpenBSD on my secondary, so I've got some limited experience with it.

Nothing against Postfix, it just feels that with my setup I'm using an 18 wheeler to transport a case of beer...

  13. Pique adversial computing: we have silently switched out a part of the government email infra from US Big Tech to EU, #OpenBSD / #OpenSMTPD based infra.

How do you like us now Bezos? 😈

  15. The single downside of running a mailserver with a modern CPU and NVMe storage is that sysupgrade blasts through it so fast that it does not allow to fetch a coffee (or whatever).

2m16s from running sysupgrade -s to it being back in production.

What a complete and utter madness.

  17. After thorough testing, we are in the process of upgrading our mailservers (plural) to the latest OpenBSD 7.9 snapshots.

This helps us to keep our clients safer. OpenSMTPD was already way ahead when it comes to exploit mitigations - especially on OpenBSD. The developers have taken it even further with splitting the daemon into six parts which all are now randomly relinked on reboot.

If that is too technical, the short version is: the mailboxes of our clients are now even better protected against baddies :)

  18. We are very close to a new OpenBSD release. "You Have Installed OpenBSD. Now For The Daily Tasks." nxdomain.no/~peter/openbsd_ins can help you prepare for the upgrade.

If you are using exim as your MTA (or any other non-base system MTA), "OpenSMTPD Is The Mail Server For The Future" nxdomain.no/~peter/time_for_op contains useful pointers for a better mail future.

  20. I put my #mailserver setup with #opensmtpd on Codeberg: codeberg.org/davd/docker-opens in case anyone wants to set up something similar and wants to reference configs, etc. #selfhosted

  22. Is there any mailing list manager that integrates well with #OpenSMTPD?

  23. Nice side effect: My config is now down to just a single file with 36 lines, 19 of which are folder name configs probably very specific to my users.

Conclusion: For as long as there's no #openimapd, #dovecot is still the preferred (read simplest) #imap server for little self-hosted setups like mine.

Ci vediamo all'Officina Informatica, in via di Magolo 32, a #Empoli

  26. I remember that a few months ago, there was a bit of a brouhaha around #dovecot removing a few features in the next release of the free open source version of the server (as is their right, I'm stating a fact and not complaining about it).

As my #selfhosted dovecot instance apparently had been up for long enough to have the TLS cert expire (oops), that had me thinking - is there a fairly simple #IMAP server available, kind of in the vein of #OpenBSD's #opensmtpd or httpd that supports imaps and reading emails from Maildir, but with otherwise fairly low count of bells and whistles?

  28. what #disroot, #systemli, and #riseup did that made me build a similar collective. currently running some services under #openbsd from #indonesia:

but, i ponder what i must do to pass the #security and perfomance standard.

can someone answer my question? i appreciate it so much

  29. @pertho

I'd kinda been hoping that the #OpenBSD folks would create something like OpenIMAP similar to #OpenSMTPD which I appreciate. Ah well.

Fortunately, my Dovecot install isn't very fancy, so at least for my concerns, the recently-dropped features are largely a non-issue. But it's an action that has trust repercussions so it's worth poking at some other options.

  30. 🚨BREAKING🚨: #Meta discovers the wonders of #RFCs, but #ZuckMail still can't find its way to #OpenSMTPD servers! 😂 Who knew that ignoring decades-old email protocols could lead to such groundbreaking failure? 📨🔍
