Want to make everyone else in your #OpenPlan office hate you? Be a group of 3-4 who have decided to all cluster around one person's computer to have a video call with someone. So that you need to speak out loud for the remote person to hear you, and you've got the computer's speakers up so you can all hear that person.
So that *all of us* can — and *must* — hear all of you.😠

But valuing us only for our economic output, or adding "new skillsets" and "#inspiration to a workplace" is not #inclusion. It is dehumanizing.

I know I can be a pill about cube farms and open-plan offices. I admit: there is no one-size-fits-all solution for work.
I’m sure that open-plan offices have improved creativity and collaboration in many places, such as in the imaginations of executives who implement them.

When my company moved us from private offices to an #OpenPlan, they surveyed us about our workflow and needs. Then we discovered they’d already built out the space; the consultation process was a sham. This is common, as I write in #ScientificAmerican. Would love to hear from scientists or other academics who currently work in large #openPlan offices with #hotdesking (+ only 70% of the desk space needed means lockers + absolutely no items left on desk overnight).
How do you make it work? The combination of focused work, close collaboration with some colleagues and lots of online meetings with externals?
What do I need to do now to prepare?
