New #Jolla tonight! Not sure which Fedi people will be there, but I'll be happy to meet you and exchange thoughts and experiences.

For curiosity, I'll be bringing some old Linux phones - original Jolla, Meizu Pro 5 Ubuntu Edition, #Openmoko GTA04 (yes, 4, ie motherboard upgrade). Sadly it seems I've experimented with Moslo for my Nokia #N950 and it doesn't boot currently so not very interesting, should probably flash it back to stock but no time since leaving soon.

Soooo I recently got my hands on an #Openmoko #Freerunner phone that I want to try to bring back to life. Anyone out there with experience? Recommended OS to use? @oldphonepreservation ?

I've also been using the #openmoko and I'm now also using the #Librem5 as my daily phone.

I'm strongly against the forced use of apps that are only running on #bigtech operating systems like iOS and Android (#appdwang), especially if I'm forced by government or banks.

The Librem 5 might be less convenient than Apple or Google phones, but I'm enjoying my #freedom as a user every day. Also I really like the pure #Linux on the phone.

#FOSS enables #DigitalSovereignty.

The battery arrived, I put it in the #OpenMoko Neo FreeRunner, and it booted #SHR.

However, the battery indicator in SHR does not show any information about the battery level or whether power is connected or not.

But nice to see that the phone still boots!

Also when connected to the original power supply, I do not see any led light, but I do not remember if there used to be a led indicating that the phone is charging or not.

@fraggle it was fantastic! Had a #Freerunner and a lot of my early field surveys for #OpenStreetMap were made possible thanks to it.

Its ruggedness was incredible and it looked basically like new when I recently pulled it out of my "old hardware box", despite being subjected to quite some rough treatment throughout its lifetime.

@fraggle Yes, I still haven an #openmoko in a drawer. Unfortunately, I can not charge it any more to start it up. Currently I use a #Librem5 as daily phone.

Kyllä on kiitos iloa, onpa hienoa kun ei tarvitse itse kirjoittaa kun noin hyvin jäsennetysti ja yksityiskohtaisesti on jo kirjoitettu.

Itse vaihdoin juuri hakukoneen eurooppalaiseen @StartpageSearch.

Aikoinaan olin jo hyvin tuolla aste 3:ssa kun oli ensin käytössä 2008 -> #openmoko ja sitten Ubuntu-puhelin (välissä Nokia N9 ja Jolla), mutta vuodesta 2017 regressiota puhelimissa. Toisaalta kyllä aste 2 täysin hoidossa paitsi osa sposteista.

Ich hab hier noch eins rumliegen, das ich gegen Versandkosten an geneigte Menschen abgeben würde. Der Akku ist nicht aufgebläht, aber so am Netzteil hat das Ding erstmal nix gesagt. Der ist sicher tot. Ich weiß aber ehrlich gesagt auch nicht mehr, ob da ohne SD-Karte überhaupt was ging. 🙈
Der Weichmacher verlässt auch langsam das Gehäuse, also ggf. wirklich nur für Bastelzwecke…

Приветствую всех! Последние годы довольно часто обсуждаются проекты open-source телефонов. В основном это всякие смартфоны на Linux, иногда припоминают и всякую экзотику типа OpenMoko. Но есть одна проблема — baseband, процессор модема, который непосредственно отвечает за всё его взаимодействие с сетями. Эти чипы исполняют проприетарный код, исходники которого распространяются под строгими NDA и недоступны практически никому. Как насчёт того, чтобы создать открытый GSM-телефон? Именно об этом мы сегодня и поговорим, а заодно и попробуем запустить такой экземпляр. Итак, в сегодняшней статье поговорим о том, насколько реально простому пользователю получить GSM-телефон, прошивка модема в котором работает без блобов. Попутно выясним, как это сделать и что из этого получится. Традиционно будет много интересного.

For those not familiar: the TI Calypso chipset is what powered the cellular modem in the #OpenMoko Neo1973 and FreeRunner, and the target baseband chipset for the OsmcomBB project in 2010.
