Ever since my PhD contract has ended last month, I have been going through my personal project backlog, including this very Mastodon account and actually making progress on my personal website.
Yesterday, I was thinking what to do about my Goodreads account when I discovered @bookwyrm and by proxy @OpenLibrary and @inventaire ! Obviously, I am now on bookwyrm.social.
Because my Goodreads shelves are a mess, many of my books can't be imported automatically, including some japanese light novels and web serials. The latter, I've never really bothered to track outside of dedicated websites (novelupdates, ao3, fanfiction.net) because of how difficult it is.
Big question for people in the know and #librarians, is there a database of web serials or am I doomed to add my books manually (or programmatically)?

I might have said this earlier but worth repeating. DuckDB is freaking amazing! Today I worked on a 56G TSV file containing 55 million rows of JSON serialized documents (all of OpenLibrary editions).
I can query this file including filtering on nested JSON structures and most queries complete in a few dozen seconds worst case, but I can also create derived indexes to bring down query times to milliseconds.
All in memory on an M1 Mac with 64GB RAM.

I'm looking to migrate away from Goodreads (luckily I didn't get too far into using it).
Hoping for something very open/non-corporate.
Thoughts on #Bookwyrm vs #Openlibrary ?
Bookwyrm seems to be missing a lot of books. And the work to add them seems a waste when I can go upstream to OpenLibrary. OL lacks the social features but Bookwyrm seems very uh... basic & kinda ugly. 🤔

hmm when there is a book in #Openlibrary (to add it to #bookwyrm) but I only find the english edition but not the german (which also has a different ISBN -- should I add it as a separate book?

Veo que soléis usar Openreads, Openlibrary y Bookwyrm.
Mi intención es usarlo como hasta ahora Goodreads, llevar un control de los libros que voy leyendo, de los libros que quiero leer, escribir alguna opinión de alguno que me haya gustado y leer las opiniones de los demás.
Doy por hecho que tendré que crear muchas fichas de libros sea donde sea. Pero cual sería el más similar? Creo que sería Bookwyrm por lo que he leído.
Y si es Bookwyrm, necesito meterme en una instancia de España, para poder leer las opiniones de los libros que vayan publicando aquí o están federados como mastodon?

Aber ich bin unglaublich froh, dass wir jetzt die Option #24_7 haben. Natürlich wird während der #openlibrary Öffnungszeiten etwas „schiefgehen”. Aber das passiert auch, wenn wir vor Ort sind. Menschen sind unterschiedlich, aber die meisten halten sich an die gemeinsamen Regeln. Und wäre unsere Bibliothek mit einem quadratischen, übersichtlichen und gut einsehbaren Grundriss genauso attraktiv wie der verwinkelte Grundriss mit Blick auf den grünen Campus?

#openlibrary ist ein doppeldeutiger Begriff. Die Bibliothek ist nicht offen 🔑, aber der Bibliotheksausweis öffnet den Ort Bibliothek. 🪄
Damit schaffen wir die Option, die Bibliothek flexibel zu öffnen, wenn sie für Studierende der TUHH gebraucht wird, ohne einen Wachdienst zusätzlich zu finanzieren.Dennoch, dass so viele Besucher*innen jetzt plötzlich vor der verschlossenen Tür stehen, weil sie den Ort nutzen aber keinen (40€-) Ausweis haben …

「Wayback Machine」や「OpenLibrary」が利用できなかった件について、現在では解消したようなので記事を書きました。
Internet Archiveが「光ファイバーの切断」が原因としており、サンフランシスコにあるIAのデータセンターの位置関係等から、本当に自前のファイバーがぶった切られたのではないか？みたいな話もしていますので、参考にしていただければ幸いです！

While the technical issues I had with my #BookWyrm instance are now resolved, I did take the opportunity to experiment with #NeoDB .
And I must say, I _am_ impressed with how fast NeoDB is - and how quickly it gets media information from other platforms. With BookWyrm, much of the time I had to manually add new books to #OpenLibrary to get it into my lists. With NeoDB, the system _very_ quickly searches a multitude of sources, and almost always seems to find something within a few seconds.
If you haven't committed yourself to any specific platform, I recommend that you check it out.

@tub Unsere #OpenLibrary war ein langes und gemeinschaftliches Projekt. Einige Vorstreiter wie @hw sind währenddessen in den wohlverdienten Ruhestand gegangen. Ich freue mich, dass viele, die das Projekt mitgetragen haben, hier im #fediverse unterwegs sind: @Niggibib als Projektleitung, @sinensetin für vieles daneben und darüberhinaus, @JanJaeger u.a. mit dem special Feature #Bibliotheksausweis und @vform mit dem Wissen über das Bibliothekssystem und alles, was schiefgehen kann. 💪🏻

Maybe I was a bit harsh on #OpenLibrary the degree to what they let you edit for a #books metadata is quite crazy. They even let you match it up against a Anna's Archive MD5 if you just want to obtain a copy of a certain ISBN. I cleaned up the page for my e-book copy of #Foundation and looks quite nice now:

So sieht eine #Bibliothek aus, bei der 64,17% (Kinderbibliothek mehr als 88%) des Bestandes am vorletzten Öffnungstag vor der bau- und modernisierungsbedingten zweimonatigen Schliessung ausgeliehen sind. Normal sind maximal ca. 30%.
