  1. Well, shit... while I've been very happy with what I've been able to put together with #Multiboard for my tiny tool wall, I don't think I'm going to extend it any further. What's more, I'm going to eventually replace it with an #openGrid setup. It's really a shame, because I wanted to like Multiboard/Multibuild/Multibin *so, so badly*, but it becomes more obvious with each month that goes by without so much as a peep from the dev "team" (one guy) that it has stalled completely (and the licensing situation is just ridiculous on its face).

    I cannot get behind the idea that they want to charge any money whatsoever, even if it's just considered "support", when the system has:

    - Lackluster/out of date/altogether missing documentation
    - Models that have been broken for months/years
    - No (actual, clear) road map
    - A "you'll have to trust me, bro" licensing model
    - Completely usurped its own creators' discoverability on Thangs by putting up literally thousands of models, splitting each tiny variation off onto its own page

    There also seem to be all of the *trappings* of a vibrant community -- forums, a feedback area with a voting mechanism, etc. -- but any interaction in that community from the folks in charge is noticeably absent, and every 5th feedback post is someone lamenting the time they wasted up to this point only to discover that the system is too confusing or laborious and therefore unusable.

    It had so much promise! I was so psyched to use it and design for it! This really pisses me off, but I've just got to cut my losses and move on. If anybody knows of a good drawers system for openGrid they can recommend, I would love to hear about it; that's my main hesitation about moving over. I can use #Gridfinity for bins and there are plenty of models out there for shelves, but I have yet to find a drawers system as compelling as Multibin is/was.

  2. Note that the overhang flow ratio and extra perimeters on overhangs settings are not available in Bambu Studio. In that case (and only in that case!), you should enable thick bridges. This will not print the joints between openGrid cells using concentric lines like in the second photo from the previous post in this thread, but it will get you as much coverage as possible (see attached pictures).

  3. Hmmm... might actually be getting somewhere with this. The "iron supports" setting fused everything together because I was trying to be too clever by removing the top z-distance, (foolishly) thinking the ironed surface would become the bottom layer of the next object in the stack. However, after slicing them apart with an X-Acto knife (and cutting my thumb, yay), I can see that the bottom surface *after* the ironed support looks a fair bit better than previous experiments! It's still not smooth like it would be if it was smooshed into the build plate on the first layer, but much better than the stringy nonsense I've been dealing with.

    This is all mostly #ADHD and unemployment getting the better of me, since I don't actually *need* the top surface to be pretty for these -- I'm screwing them to the underside of my desk -- but I want it to be as *perfect* as I can get it, just in case I want to use #openGrid Lite base plates in another project where aesthetics matter (or someone else does) and stack them.

    Trying now with restored 0.2mm top z-height gap for the ironed support surface.

  4. I abandoned the alternating rotation strategy and I'm just printing the #openGrid Lite base plates all face-down, which eliminates all of the overhangs (except those introduced by stacking, of course).

  5. I haven't had a chance to test it just yet, but I slapped together a quick Orca Slicer / Bambu Studio post-processing script to inject a configurable pause (default 1 minute) after each ironing layer (except the last). My hope is that this will lead to a much better surface finish on face-down stacked prints (e.g. alternating #openGrid base plates). Will update when I have an opportunity to actually use it in a print. 🤞

  6. I took the liberty of pre-generating stacks of heights 2-9 for base plate sizes 4x4 through 9x9. There are 3MF files for each plate size that contain all the stack heights, built with OrcaSlicer.

  7. I've updated my #3DPrinting stack generation script to include an `alternate` flag, which flips every other mesh upside down while stacking. This should hopefully allow me to print stacks of e.g. #openGrid base plates!

I want to like #Multibuild so, so bad, but the license, the absolute dogshit documentation, the bewildering mountain of parts, and the audacity to charge a monthly fee for a handful of simple generators is really putting me off. I understand that the monthly membership price is supposed to be a show of support for a developing product, but it's been "developing" for years and there's basically zero (official) path to take getting started. There are even errors in some of the STL files on Thangs that render pieces useless because they won't fit into their designated slot.

    I've been eyeballing #OpenGrid, which I initially wrote off as poorly expanded and too structurally weak initially; I have been watching some YouTube videos about OpenGrid and folks' setups with it, and it seems like it is more capable than I had originally thought, even if it doesn't have a library of blessed expansions like drawers and bins (it leans on #Gridfinity for that).

    What are some of you #3DPrinting folks out there using, and why? I'm *not* interested in HSW (Honeycomb Storage Wall), and yes, I've done research already. Are you going with Multiboard in spite of its drawbacks, and if so, how has that journey been so far? I want to reiterate that I am *incredibly* satisfied with what I've been able to build with it, but it feels closed down and either abandoned or at least left by the wayside while the creator pursues commercial opportunities for it (which feels like abandoning the community that made it popular).

    Can only print up to 8x7 on my printer and now seriously thinking of buying one with a larger bed. Would love to stay with #prusa, but the cost...

    No more traipsing back and forth to the printer to grab an SD card. Hallelujah!

    Now I just need to get a camera for the Zero 2 W so I can stop traipsing back and forth to monitor the print.

  12. @mcr314 @darkuncle What is the status of the #opengrid community, if there is one? Many years ago I had an open grid server running a couple of #vw parcels and had connections to some other servers. It all worked reasonably well, but there was no STUFF or people in the virtual worlds nor tools for creators. I was deep in #SecondLife #SL and, having read about virtual worlds and virtual reality #VR I was jazzed to see SOMETHING in virtual worlds really happen. I really liked building and scripting in Second Life and even sold my works there. There was (is) a real economy there. 22 years later I am still taking real $$ out of #SL occasionally although I made most of my creations free or ultra cheap. Real world life happened and I have been distracted from virtual worlds for many years. I used SecondLife about 10 years ago to create a controlled environment for study of human-robot interaction (rescue robotics) which one can’t do ethically in real life. I’ve started poking at Second Life again and it would be great to hear Open Grid is doing well.

  13. Got an issue with printing #opengrid ...grids: The first layer is still perfect - as I am used to on my C1 - but the second layer then does not stick to the first one very well, as you can see on the image. I guess the issue is that there is a chamfer on the bottom, so the second layer is printed with overhang and thus does not fully connect to the first one.

    Any ideas on how to counter that issue?

  14. I also have to admit that I misunderstood #openGrid a bit when I started this project. I had hoped there'd already be many bin designs. Instead, I'm basically reinventing stuff that exists for #GridFinity onto oG as if it was meant to exist in a Samla box lying flat on the ground

    Mit dem #3DDrucker, #FreeCAD und #openGrid habe ich den jetzt platzsparend und -- wie ich finde -- sehr aufgeräumt an eine Schranktür gehängt.

  16. @Sebat #Gridfinity für die Horizontale. Für Wandsysteme wären #Opengrid und #GOEWS die Kandidaten, die ich mir wohl als erstes ansehen würde (kein Lizenz-Drama, Gridfinity-Maße berücksichtigt)

  17. Ach ja #OpenSource man muss es einfach lieben, oder?

    Binnen drei Tagen bin ich in der #3dprint Welt auf zwei Grid Systeme aufmerksam geworden. #ModularBoard und #OpenGrid. Klar fange ich direkt an zu drucken um dann das nächste zu entdecken. Und alle haben Vor- & Nachteile und keins löst es gegenseitig auf.
    Immerhin sind sie (über Umwege) halbwegs Kompatibel (mit #gridfinity was alles auch noch gibt)

  18. @DrInterpreter @ryancordell I don’t know much about the #Metaverse. What I do know tells me it is not very interesting, (yet).

    I should also mention the open-source, free federated version of #SecondLife is #OpenSimulator. OpenSimulator.org

    Here is a list of #OpenGrid “worlds” that you can visit. Many are interconnected to each other, including to regions in #SecondLife. That’s new. Anybody can set up their own grid and connect it, or not, much like #Mastodon.
