City tech breaks in public this week — and gets rebuilt in public too. Comptroller Levine wants NYC's 8-year-broken veterans portal overhauled; OTI's new PIT Crew (who visited BetaBagels last week) is already on it.
Also: an otter's back in the Bronx River for the first time since the early 1900s.

When the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner set out to check whether agencies publish the documents they release under FOI, it needed a record of what had been released and when.
For part of that work, it used Right to Know. The review of 30 agencies' disclosure logs names it more than thirty times and cites it in the footnotes.

Halfway through 2026, here's what BetaNYC argued for and won.
New York City launched its Public Interest Technology Crew this July: five in-house teams building digital public goods instead of buying them, backed by more than $5 million and hiring for 15 roles. We asked for this since 2013. This year, the city said yes.

The Commission on Government Efficiency's preliminary report is out, and public comment is still open. If you have feedback on the report or anything else to share with the Mayor's office, now's the time.

BetaNYC Associate Board Manager Jordan Shapiro testified before the Commission on Government Efficiency (COGE) — their testimony helped anchor digital sovereignty in the Commission's preliminary report. Allies and friends of BetaNYC echoed the call for a unified digital service team.

NYC Council adopted a $125.8B FY27 budget this week (45-6): $175M more for housing vouchers, Fair Fares expanded to reach ~340,000 more New Yorkers, an NYPD hiring freeze, and $34.2M for a new 9/11 health records portal.

Want to make a public Freedom of Information (FOI) request in Australia? https://www.righttoknow.org.au makes it straightforward - every request and response is published for anyone to read.
But heaps of FOI documents are quietly released onto disclosure logs that no-one reads. So how do you find the interesting ones?
Record Radar reviews every Australian federal department's FOI releases and surfaces the ones worth reading, once a week: https://anilabs.news/recordradar/

BetaNYC joined nine organizations, including Reinvent Albany, in backing $255K for DORIS — NYC's Dept. of Records & Information Services — in the FY27 budget. Public records infrastructure that works for New Yorkers.

Yesterday, BetaNYC testified at COGE: the canonical text of NYC's Charter is hosted by a private company, not the city. We built five open-source tools to show what publicly owned civic data looks like — now we're asking for charter changes to make it official.

In 1649, a Dutch colonial lawyer went door to door collecting grievances, got thrown in jail for it, and made the case for #opengov. This week, we shipped 4 open-source AI tools.
Same fight. New tools.

Since NYC.gov was moved off TeamSite, we've lost a number of URLs that document NYC's #civictech / #govtech / #opengov history. I have an old repo of the URL, but I did not capture the text or the screenshot of the page. Important context has been erased from the broader public record.
-
I'm also curious about how to capture the indigenous history and the traditionally under-represented communities that shaped our #opengov history. If only I had graduated from college, I could turn this into a Phd application.
