I hope I won't get addicted like I did with #OpenArena

Being around FOSS a while sometimes you don't realize how formative certain games are, like I think mentally because I was around when Linux had nowhere near the spread it does now, being the kid who played Tux Racer feels like a very personal, almost private experience. Who played that?

But then you run across people who say, "Oh, OpenArena was a huge part of my youth, I'd play it all the time after school" and it hits you how important these games are, especially with economies being what they are today. Even dropping ten bucks on an older title like Quake 3 might be prohibitive.

FOSS games and especially FOSS spinoffs of games are even more important now with a growing awareness of the monstrous behaviour of game studios and publishers. I'm super into Quake 4 right now, but can I really ask people who didn't buy it on launch in 2005 to throw money at Bethesda today? I can't.

And that makes me sad. It feels like there's a piece of history being lost here, like I don't expect Quake 4 to have some renaissance on the level of Quake 1, but it does feel like the clock is ticking because it was never open-sourced.

A friend joked we could name a FOSS spinoff "OpenStrogg", heh.

Progress was made, finally got my AMD GPU properly working on my #MilkV #Megrez, and #Blender even works pretty ok on this #RISC_V #RISCV board. Next I will put #Xonotic on a test, just need to compile it. #OpenArena from the repos sadly segfaults.

Yeah, #OpenArena is an unplayable piece of shit. Uninstalled. Just how I remember FPS games being. Boring, all the the same, shitty controls, and this one can't even use a controller without a program to emulate key presses. The only good going for it is that it looks nice.

with something like #sm64decomp or #zelda64decomp requiring the OG ROM to be compiled, I wonder if it would be possible to do something in the spirit of the #openarena / #quake3arena situation, aka a free non-copyrght asset pack so that the game can be played without the original ROM but rather with some community made replacement files, but again I don't really know how any of this works so it might be completely different

I have a bug with my Quake 3 installs, like, ALL OF THEM.
Doesn't matter the sourceport, doesn't matter the operating system, doesn't matter if it's OpenArena or Q3A.
In both my PCs, my keyboard isn't the US standard layout, it's the local regional layout, so it doesn't have the tilde key next to 1 on the top row, that button is actually '

My tilde is between L and Enter on the right side of the keyboard, and if I try rebinding it to '
it has an issue where it refuses to close the terminal after that, randomly.
If I press tilde it still works but after that, ANY KEY that I press opens up chat and console again... the only thing in common between all of these installs is the keyboard layout so I just think the game isn't prepared to deal with that.

I even tweaked the taunts and sayings to be more inclusive and less late 90s teenage gamer sounding. Spielt hier wäre OpenArena unter Ubuntu 20.04. LTS und hat auch das Problem, dass beim Spielstart die Auflösung des ganzen PCsverändert wird?

Very hard or impossible to run #0ad #minecraft #vscode #intellij #androidSDK #MSteams #slack #signal. For #docker it's an other issue, I must rebuild all containers :-(
