New blog post, this time in Norwegian:
Given that your company is serious about people being the core assets and wants their engagement in your vision and goals, sociotechnical system design is the way to go. As a bonus, you'll also get better productivity, quality, and sustainable cost reductions.

This is a fantastic talk by Kent Beck. And so important. What he is saying here, using his perspective from Extreme Programming (XP), basically sums up all my talks from the last few years. His distinction between deserts and forests is the same as bureaucracy and sociotechnical/democratic systems, respectively, and the parallel universes are the unmixable world views that people carry around. No data or good arguments can make people switch from one to the other. It's futile to try, IMHO. Only by being aware of what they are and how different they make you see the world can a conscious choice be made to move from one to the other.
<thinking hat>
You can't extrapolate from a closed system to an open one, but you can reduce an open system to a closed one. Or, put it in Beck's terms, you cannot grasp a forest when all you know is the desert, but you can imagine how a forest can become a desert. 😉

Given that work also produces people, in addition to products and services, how can we make sure that we create a work environment that makes the world a better place?

Keeping it weird
In summary – I believe you should be publishing something to the web, maybe an esoteric spreadsheet, perhaps an open source javascript library, a deep dive into semantic analysis of your favorite author? Who knows? Publish, but keep it weird and humble.
~ Tom Critchlow, from An alternative to the bullshit industrial complex
slip:4utobu1.
It’s probably confirmation bias, but I definitely agree with this sentiment. The internet enables an endless array of things. For me it’s mostly about me being enabled to share what I’m creating. Weird? Definitely. Humble? …uh, okay okay still working on that.

Prof. Karol Zyczkowski from the Jagiellonian University presents a detailed lecture on quantum chaos in open systems in Nordita. The talk examines the differences between continuous and discrete time evolution in open quantum systems, the purification and coherification of quantum channels, and the transition between quantum and classical regimes.
📘 Watch the #OpenAccess lecture and join the discussion online on Enabla: https://enabla.com/pub/742/about
This is an opportunity to explore key concepts in #QuantumPhysics, #OpenSystems, and #QuantumChannels.

The summer holiday slumber is a great time for some more rabbit-hole deep dives. 🤓 Like Fred Emery and Eric Trist's conceptualization of a system's environment.

Had a lovely chat with Bruce Eckel and James Ward the other day.

👏 We had a nice chat because it triggered a very interesting conversation within the group. It becomes explicit that having "power with" rather than "power over" is better. That is the strength of designing as a group, either organization structures, processes, or software.
In retrospect, when you took a naïve approach, what was the context and the outcome?

Last year, I delivered a workshop at a meetup, and one of the exercises was about organization evolution using @TeamTopologies.
🧪 One of the attendees said they were being naïve in the approach, and their solution was not scientific.
🌱 It immediately rang a bell and connected many dots in my head. Yes, there is no "scientific approach" or "management approach" when it comes to setting team structures in a work environment.

Cory Doctorow's McLuhan Lecture 2024
As Dan Gilmor @dangillmor says:
"[Cory's talk] explains enshittification's rise and rise and rise -- and how everyone but monopolists is victimized.
It doesn't have to be this way. Cory tells us what we can do about it.
He is a sage for our times, and we should take his advice, now."

We were all around a wall, doing #EventStorming, when it became visible between the current and desired flow. The team quickly assessed what they could do by visualizing and discussing options. It moved on to implement a model that not only addressed new business requirements but also allowed them to tidy the current landscape.
Remember, thinking in systems! 🚀
By thinking in systems, have you ever had a similar experience? 💡

Systems thinking in action: I was supporting a team in using #DomainDrivenDesign principles and practices, and their use case is to build a model that will sit between SAP and the different channels (think about web and mobile apps for customers, customer support agents, and whatnot).

I’m looking for a meme/cartoon about #complexity / #opensystems that was popular some time ago, but I can’t find it anymore.
In the cartoon there were a bunch of people looking at a design claiming ‘they were done’, while 1 other person looked outside the room, saw the mess outside (bunch of squirly lines) and said something like ‘guys, are we sure?’
Does anyone know which cartoon I mean and can provide me a source?

Hey folks!
Together with @trondhjort, we have a workshop that is focused on on open system thinking, how how it can be applied to set strategic goals and evolve the organisation structure.
We are looking for conferences where we can run the workshop. Do you have any suggestions?
