Survey of Chthonic Structures below Spiegelberg Cathedral (ODPC 2026 entry)

It has been a while since I took part in the One Page Dungeon Contest. Somehow the last few years (the last decade and a half…) I only realized the contest was on when it was finished, or nearly so.

This year I did manage to get into it on time, and I created a small location scenario nominally for my Glimmermark campaign, but should be appropriate for all kinds of fantasy games. Not that I started with that. I started with a map from watabou’s dungeon generator, filled it with my random stocking tables, and then fleshed it out in detail.

I did NOT know it was going to be an underground temple complex until mid-process, and then some of the ideas I had for the Glimmermark, the city of Spiegelberg, and it’s history congealed into an actual place.

Mind you, a few notes for the interested:

• Chthon is of course Dionysos, the name being derived from his epithet Chthonios Χθόνιος (“the subterranean”)
• Abraeus is a variant of Achelous, the god of the Achelous River. As Spiegelberg lies on the Aber River, the name follows suit. Achelous also had a connection with Dionysos, as he was a chthonic god, and the name Achelous also was a poetic way to describe water, often in connection to mixing it with wine.
• Tarantella Spiders I got from the Old School Essentials SRD; I found the idea of a spider responsible for the dancing plague thematically rather appropriate
• Garbugs are from the original Fiend Folio, a weird relative of the Carrion Crawler, described as a flying nightmare mix of crabs and wasps wasps
