Mastodon Incident Report / Root cause analysis:
Earlier today, users experienced timeouts with Search, Hashtags, and Autocomplete.
Root Cause: Our setup separates the Mastodon frontend VPS (Hetzner) from backend services (for example Elasticsearch) via an OPNSense firewall. Suricata (our IPS) triggered a false-positive on internal traffic and aggressively blocked the VPS IP, severing the connection to the search database.
Resolution: We identified the false-positive, added the frontend IP to the whitelist, and traffic immediately normalized. Everything is back to green!

I cleaned up my firewall rules last weekend, removing only those I was certain were no longer needed and related to systems I'd already decommissioned.
Today I spent 40 minutes troubleshooting why my Forgejo-Runner deployment pipeline wasn't working anymore...
Turns out one of those "cleaned up" rules was still in use. Oops! 😂
But I have snapshots!
~ # diff /etc/pf.conf /.zfs/snapshot/autosnap_2026-01-17_01:00:02_daily/etc/pf.confThis quickly revealed the culprit and let me easily restore the missing rule.
Everything's working and green again 🙂

Wir hatten heute ein "kleines Upsi" in der Infrastruktur von burningboard.net. Geht auf meine Kappe! 🙋♂️
Wenn man eine Partition löscht, sollte man sich RICHTIG sicher sein, dass man die richtige Partitions-ID verwendet..
Ich wollte die Swap-Partition löschen und größer anlegen und war um eines verrutscht und habe stattdessen die /boot Partition gelöscht (ID 1 statt 2). Nunja, zum Glück haben wir Backups die auch funktionieren 😓 😅
Hätte ich jetzt am Silvester Abend auch nicht unbedingt gebraucht so ein Disaster-Recovery.
