  1. I appreciate all the love for my previous post, so, here's a little more velvet worm / Peripatus cuteness to start your weekend off right!

Beneath that adorable little eye, you can see the stumpy glue cannon, which it uses to subdue prey!

  5. @frankashwood Very nice photograph of an #Onychophora species. This taxon is predominantly native to the Southern Hemisphere and possesses morphological characteristics homologous to the #Arthropoda. Depending on the phylogenetic concept (Ecdysozoa versus Articulata), the understanding of the relationship between Onychophora and the Annelida differs. However, they are always classified as relatives of Arthropoda. For example, within the so called #Panarthropoda.

  10. I recently discovered this incredible creature while on a night walk in the NZ bush. Known as a 'Velvet Worm', this adorable invertebrate is actually an active predator which immobilises its prey with organic glue fired from turrets on its head!

Basically unchanged in about 400 million years, they are so wonderful that of course they get more than a few mentions in my upcoming book 'The World Beneath Our Feet' (coming later this year).

  17. Here’s the final print of an adorable, caterpillar-like blue velvet worm from New Zealand or Aotearoa for #InsertAnInvert2024!

Velvet worms (phylum: Onychophora) are named for their velvet-like texture and somewhat wormlike appearance. They are elongate, soft-bodied, many-legged nocturnal animals who spit slime to trap prey, somewhere between worms and arthropods. 🧵1/n
